Try Not to Die!! [Tuesday, May 10, 3rd period]

Today, Anakin was a little bit grateful for the cloak he habitually wore as he waited for his class to arrive outside on the border between Fandom and the Viking village. It was a little chilly for a guy who grew up in the desert.

"The island has given us too great an opportunity to ignore today in this course," Anakin told them as his robe flapped occasionally in the breeze in front of a sturdy little clue box. "You will have to complete two tasks today that will hopefully teach you a little bit more about the Vikings and their traditions. Try not to die!"

With that he stepped out of the way of the clue box.

Like it's beginning to dawn on you that your instructor might be a crazy person.

Pick one of the these two tasks, where you will learn about traditional Viking activities. When you complete them, you will earn your next clue.

In Weaving, you race through town until you come to a woman making jewelry! Ha, did you think you'd been knitting a sweater? Listen as she explains the instructions in Ancient Norse, then wrap enough silver around the frame to make a bracelet. When she is satisfied with your work, you'll receive your next clue.

In Waving, you run through town and to the wharfs, where a number of villagers were working on a ship that made the Vikings so rightfully feared.

Using the ancient tools of this time, you must carve a steering oar. When your work has satisfied the foreman, he will give you your next clue.

Everyone's clue will lead them back to the docks of Fandom, where there will find enough rowboats to take them to the Isle of Ikea. Once there, you must complete a Billy bookcase without instructions. When you're finished, an Ikea salesperson will hand you the final clue, which tells you to make your way back (via rowboat, again. Anakin believes in a lot of exercise) to the Viking village where he's waiting for you. First one back wins this day's prize!

He'll ~~reiterate what the RNG has decided below~~ congratulate you on completing your first class and not dying!

If you won today, you get to wear a genuine Viking hat for the rest of the day, should you choose. It's quite fetching.

If you get stuck anywhere, lose an oar or manage to really piss of a Viking...

As on the Amazing Race, if your character gets frustrated with the first Detour task they chose, they are allowed to switch, but this will cost you time. You have to row the boats yourself (no flying to and from, for example) or you will again be slapped with another time penalty. This is mostly for your own information if you want to play with the narrative of how the RNGs results happened. Mostly, though, have fun with this!

Angelica decided on weaving (wondering more and more just what kind of school Emma had sent her to). She was making good progress and enjoying herself until the silver and copper melted into a gooey glob of metal and dripped off the wooden dowel. Dismayed, she looked around frantically, hoping no one had noticed, then shoved the ruined bracelet under a rock and reached for another frame.

This, of course, put her firmly behind the rest of the class.

Cassidy had never done anything with metal like this before, so she was paying careful attention, wanting to make sure she got everything right.

Angelica was horribly nervous after accidentally melting her bracelet, so she took her time with the bookcase. She had to anyway with the lack of instructions, though most of it seemed relatively intuitive? Hopefully?

She might be underestimating IKEA.

Is Tahiri standing next to Anakin dressed like a Viking? SHE MUST BE.

Ok, so boats were something new for her. It took her some time to row the boat where it was supposed to go -- instead of around in circles. If she hadn't thought Professor Anakin would frown on it, she would have used Craft to make the boat do what she wanted it to do.

But the purpose of this was probably to learn something new and not take the most obvious or easy way out.

She finally got to Isle of Ikea and putting together the bookcase was a lot easier than working the boats. Thank the Darkness that Poppy was a carpenter and she had grown up watching him put things together without any written instructions at all.

By the time she fought with the boat and got back to the dock, her arms were sore.

Angelica was the last to return and looked positively miserable about it. She didn't want to look incompetent on her very first day of classes. But at least she hadn't died?

"That was the first time I have ever been in a boat," Cassidy said cheerfully when she made it back to where Anakin was waiting. "And I didn't even crash it!"

Yes, Anakin, this was a major accomplishment for her.

Warren had thought that he'd had this whole thing in the bag. After all, while everyone else in the class had to run across town, he had a serious advantage in getting from point A to point B. But the nice viking lady at the weaving station had been difficult to understand, and Warren had never been very good at arts-and-crafts things (his last attempt had led to him gluing his feathers to the wall of one of the cabins, after all), and so after poking himself with silver wire and tying it hopelessly in knots a few times, he'd ended up giving up and making his way to the wharfs, instead.

Carving was way more up his alley. He managed to get through the task quickly, without even breaking a sweat, but he'd lost so much time at the other station, he was pretty certain he'd blown the rest of the race.

Oh, man. Warren so wasn't made for this sort of thing.

The Worthingtons paid people to put together their bookcases for them! How was this supposed to work?

At least the rowing wasn't so bad. Thank you again, X-gene enhanced upper body strength. He rowed back quickly, but not nearly quickly enough to make up for the fact that he sucked at arts and crafts.

When Warren made it back to see that almost everyone else had made it there before him, he winced, just a little. See, that was where his cockiness had gotten him.

"Ouch."

He was going to spend the rest of the week practising up on his arts and crafts skills.
