Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The weather was nice, the school wasn't currently under attack from forces not of this universe and they were still in Iceland. Oh yeah, it was day one of the rest of the newbies' lives.

Welcome to fandom, kiddos. Try not to trip over left over sombreros from Thursday!

Spock didn't know what a nub was, and he studied astrophysics for fun. "Many students enjoy 'hanging out' in the common rooms," Spock said. "Or at one of the establishments in town. There are also many extracurricular activities and clubs."

Sam made a face. "Ugh, clubs." She wasn't much of a joiner. Though hanging out sounded okay, so long as they weren't all giant nerds. "Let me guess, you're in the Vulcan club?"

"No," Spock said. "I am the only Vulcan here."

She couldn't not find that funny.

"You must be very lonely," she said gravely.

"Not at all," Spock said.

He enjoyed solitude.

"You don't spend time crying with your head in the fireplace?"

That was a good sign, actually, since the girl she'd met who did that ended up locking Sam and her friends in a sound booth in her basement with plans to keep them forever.

Spock was beginning to suspect this girl was mentally unstable. "No," he said. "No, I do not."

He wouldn't be the first.

"So you're just here to be all 'I'm an alien' at me and tell me to stay in the dorms after dark, then?"

She might have interpreted his warning about danger the wrong way.

"That is not what I said," Spock corrected her. "I do not care when you leave the dorms. I merely stated that in times of danger, such as invasions, the dorms are generally safe."

Wait, back that up.

"Invasions?"

"They happen periodically. I assure you, it is nothing to be concerned about. We have managed to repel them at every occurrence."

Okay, seriously, this had to be some kind of video game thing, right?

"Invasions of what?"

"Most recently, there were some sort of...turtle creatures," Spock said. "Among other things. I believe the small children of residents of the island were kidnapped."

Video games gone horribly, horribly wrong.

"Oh." A pause. "So are drugs really popular around here, or is that just you, again?"

"I do not partake in illicit substances. However, the island has no drinking age, so whether or not to imbibe is your decision." He just felt like he should let her know that, even though it seemed like a terrible idea.

Yeah, this guy was absolutely the nubbiest nub that ever nubbed.

Lucky Sam.

"Wait, like, none? Is that even legal?" She had to ask. She'd been arrested five times, she didn't want to get tricked into making that six. Her sixth arrest was going to be special dammit.

Like legal made any difference on this island. "It is the law here," he told her. "Make your decisions carefully." Somehow he doubted that.

This place had a whole new set of laws? Sam looked around.

". . . Aren't we supposed to be in Maryland?"

Someone might have just noticed the vikings.

"At present we appear to be in Iceland, sometime in the late first millennium of the Common Era," Spock informed her. "The island, as it happens...moves."

"No chiz?" Sam was having a bit of trouble with that one. "Shouldn't people all be speaking Iceland-ish or soemthing, then?" Wait. "Whose common era?" What?

"I suspect some sort of universal translator field is in effect," Spock said. Those existed, don'tcha know. "As for the Common Era, you might prefer 'AD.'"

". . . Huh?"

Yep, there went the brain-breaking. It took awhile, but we all knew she'd get there eventually.

Yes, Spock recognized it. "Welcome to Fandom High," he said. "You will get used to it."

"I fell asleep on the bus or something, right?" She pinched herself. "Ow!"

Okay, not asleep on the bus.

"No," Spock told her, as gently as he could. "You are awake. This is not a dream or a hallucination. We are not 'punking' you. Everything you see is real and true."
