Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The weather was nice, the school wasn't currently under attack from forces not of this universe and they were still in Iceland. Oh yeah, it was day one of the rest of the newbies' lives.

Welcome to fandom, kiddos. Try not to trip over left over sombreros from Thursday!

Yes, Spock recognized it. "Welcome to Fandom High," he said. "You will get used to it."

"I fell asleep on the bus or something, right?" She pinched herself. "Ow!"

Okay, not asleep on the bus.

"No," Spock told her, as gently as he could. "You are awake. This is not a dream or a hallucination. We are not 'punking' you. Everything you see is real and true."

"We landed in Baltimore," Sam pointed out. "The bus ride wasn't that long."

Maybe she had her geography all messed up? That was a possibility.

"The bus came through a portal on the causeway."

With the way Reno drove, it was no surprise she hadn't noticed.

"Right. 'Cause those just happen all the time."

Oh, good, she was starting to understand. "Precisely."

Sam decided she didn't like Spock.

"And you're an alien," she said. "And little kids get kidnapped by turtles around here."

Really, she had to put up with this just for one little smoothie on a cop's head?

This so wasn't fair.

Nothing he'd told her was untruthful. "Yes, that's all correct," he confirmed. "You're beginning to understand."

She really wasn't.

"Can I kick you? It'll make me feel better."

What was sad was that it would actually totally make her feel better.

"That is completely illogical," Spock informed her. "No. You may not kick me."

Sam pouted at him. "Maybe I like being illogical."

"Yes," Spock agreed. "This is a trait that I have found that many humans share."

"That's what makes us fun."

Spock would beg to disagree. "You are entitled to your opinion. You may also wish to look out for the squirrels, should you choose to engage in any illicit activity." Not that Sam would do that, of course.

Squirrels. Right.

"They're the law enforcement?"

"No." That would be silly. "Most of the law enforcement is taken care of by the patrolling armored troopers," Spock explained. "The squirrels gather information for the daily news radio broadcasts."

Sam once again managed to zero in on the most important information, there. "The police wear armor?"

"You will see them in town."

"And they wear armor." Sam was . . . not happy to hear that. "Are they at least easy to outrun?"

"I would not know," Spock told her. "I have had no need to find out."

It suddenly occurred to Sam that this might be a conspiracy. A conspiracy to turn her into a nub. They had her surrounded.

She was getting a mite twitchy.

"But -- I mean, what are the rules? Are the squirrels snitches? Do they work for the vikings?"

Calm down, Sam. Deep breaths.

"No," Spock said, like this should have been obvious. "They work for the pirate who runs the radio station." Duh.

That did it.

"I'll never join you!" Sam shrieked, and turned to run away.

No nub conspiracy of vikings and squirrels and pirates was going to get her.

Spock sighed and let her go. He'd done his best, and she knew where to find him when she decided to accept reality.
