Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The weather was nice, the school wasn't currently under attack from forces not of this universe and they were still in Iceland. Oh yeah, it was day one of the rest of the newbies' lives.

Welcome to fandom, kiddos. Try not to trip over left over sombreros from Thursday!

[Please wait for OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible.]

Annie took this in... and stuck a hand on her hip. "Oh, I see how this is going," she said. "Haze the new girl, right? But lucky for me I happen to know it doesn't rain upside down, and islands don't move unless there's been years and years and years- and years- of things like plate movements happening. You couldn't just stick with the old classic of selling elevator passes to the nonexistent fifth floor?"

In other circumstances, he would have been offended at being taken for a liar, but Faramir let it pass now. He could not have believed it either.

"I could not sell you passes as there are no elevators in the building, and there are six floors," he replied easily. At least he hadn't needed to ask her what they were thanks to his many readings. "I assure you, this is no jest. I myself am from a world where there is no electricity or warm showers. There are many people here who come from worlds other than Earth."

Um.

She frowned, and found she was still left with "um." "What was that again?" she asked.

He chuckled and inclined his head. "I apologise. I believe I am attempting to say too much at once." He did that rather other.

"Fandom is a haven for people from many different worlds. Some are merely from the past or the future, others are from places that are not related to this one at all. My world would fall under the latter."

"So you're telling me you're like an alien from another time without showers," she summed up. She was really trying to work this through her brain here.

"Another world at least," he said, not knowing if something as fluid as time could be applied here. "That would be one way of putting it, yes."

"Huh." She frowned again. "The scary thing is that this is so weird I kind of believe it, because who would make something like that up?"

"It would be a rather far fetched prank to pull on someone," Faramir agreed. "It would be far more efficient to keep closer to the truth if you wish to succeed in fooling someone."

"Which would be a mean thing to do," she pointed out, because it would. "So how many people from, you know, other worlds are there here?"

"And something I would not do to someone who is entrusted to me," he assured her. Really, he would not do it regardless of that. "I could not give you a number, I have not spoken to everyone here, as much as I would like to. It is fascinating hearing their stories. I can tell you that most of my friends seem to come from a different world or time than this one."

"But.... then how does this place not make the news?" Annie wondered. "Where's Brian Williams with the details? Or is this maybe a more Stone Phillips story? I'd never even heard of this place not too long ago."

He shrugged a little, knowing very little about how the news worked and the names were unfamiliar to him. "I believe it is simply the nature of this place. It is not entirely unknown, it has drawn the attention of other people before, and not in a good way. I have heard talk of invasions, but I have not yet had to deal with one."

Because he was an owl during one of it.

"Invasions? Invasions of what?" Because she was thinking body-snatchers and that couldn't be right.

"I have heard speak of creatures called gremlins," he said, trying to sound reassuring. "I assure you that you are safe. Many here know how to fight and will do everything to protect others. Yet, it seems it is best to warn you that what happens here is not always harmless. I assure you, it happens rarely."

[identity profile] annieadderall.livejournal.com 2011-05-07 05:41 pm (UTC)(link)
"Uh huh. Well, that's reassuring." She was not reassured. That was worrying. "They should put that in the brochure!"

[identity profile] thinkbetterofme.livejournal.com 2011-05-07 05:42 pm (UTC)(link)
"It would be good to know," he agreed, giving her an apologetic look. "I apologise. I did not wish to worry you, but I do not think hiding the truth is in anyone's interest. Strange things happen here and it is usually best to be warned."

"I'm definitely warned," Annie nodded. "Maybe I should start learning karate?"

"That is a fighting style?" he assumed. "It would not hurt. Many here are proficient in fighting, though not all. I grew up learning to wield the blade, I'd be willing to teach you if you so desire. Yet, I assure you. It is not necessary."

[identity profile] annieadderall.livejournal.com 2011-05-07 07:47 pm (UTC)(link)
"The blade?" she said. "Does that mean swordfighting or were you just in a gang or something?" Not that she knew what kind of gangs they had wherever he came from, but this was a way to learn.

"I am a Ranger of Ithilien," he replied, wondering if that counted as a gang. "A soldier, but I do mean swordfighting. I can wield the bow as well."

"You shoot arrows?" She paused. "I've never known anyone who could shoot arrows before. I mean, outside of gym class."

"As I understand it most people here know how to use guns," he nodded. "I admit I find those weapons much too loud."
