Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The weather was nice, the school wasn't currently under attack from forces not of this universe and they were still in Iceland. Oh yeah, it was day one of the rest of the newbies' lives.

Welcome to fandom, kiddos. Try not to trip over left over sombreros from Thursday!

[Please wait for OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible.]

He shrugged a little, knowing very little about how the news worked and the names were unfamiliar to him. "I believe it is simply the nature of this place. It is not entirely unknown, it has drawn the attention of other people before, and not in a good way. I have heard talk of invasions, but I have not yet had to deal with one."

Because he was an owl during one of it.

"Invasions? Invasions of what?" Because she was thinking body-snatchers and that couldn't be right.

"I have heard speak of creatures called gremlins," he said, trying to sound reassuring. "I assure you that you are safe. Many here know how to fight and will do everything to protect others. Yet, it seems it is best to warn you that what happens here is not always harmless. I assure you, it happens rarely."

"Uh huh. Well, that's reassuring." She was not reassured. That was worrying. "They should put that in the brochure!"

"It would be good to know," he agreed, giving her an apologetic look. "I apologise. I did not wish to worry you, but I do not think hiding the truth is in anyone's interest. Strange things happen here and it is usually best to be warned."

"I'm definitely warned," Annie nodded. "Maybe I should start learning karate?"

"That is a fighting style?" he assumed. "It would not hurt. Many here are proficient in fighting, though not all. I grew up learning to wield the blade, I'd be willing to teach you if you so desire. Yet, I assure you. It is not necessary."

"The blade?" she said. "Does that mean swordfighting or were you just in a gang or something?" Not that she knew what kind of gangs they had wherever he came from, but this was a way to learn.

"I am a Ranger of Ithilien," he replied, wondering if that counted as a gang. "A soldier, but I do mean swordfighting. I can wield the bow as well."

"You shoot arrows?" She paused. "I've never known anyone who could shoot arrows before. I mean, outside of gym class."

"As I understand it most people here know how to use guns," he nodded. "I admit I find those weapons much too loud."
