Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The weather was nice, the school wasn't currently under attack from forces not of this universe and they were still in Iceland. Oh yeah, it was day one of the rest of the newbies' lives.

Welcome to fandom, kiddos. Try not to trip over left over sombreros from Thursday!

[Please wait for OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible.]

Angelica affixed her nametag on her shirt and started looking around for someone labeled Stephanie. Her expression was one of confusion as she looked around herself. She'd never been to Virginia before, but she didn't think it would look like this.

Well, funny thing was that it didn't. Imagine that. Although that part of the explanation would have to come later.

"Angelica, right?" asked the girl with the nametag that read Hello! My name is Stephanie Brown =) with the exclamation point drawn in with purple Sharpie and the smiley face taking up every last bit of free space on the nametag. "Welcome to Fandom, my name is Stephanie Brown and I'll be your tour guide today."

"Right," Angelica said, touching her own nametag. "Um, hi, it's nice to meet you."

She seemed nice so far, and the smiley face helped put her at ease.

"You say that because you've barely met me," Stephanie said lightly, but extended a hand in greeting anyway. "Soooooooo, to get the initial confusion out of the way, where are you from?"

Steph, that sounds like a normal question. Why would it be confusing? CONTEXT, PLEASE.

She had a split second of hesitation again as she always did before touching someone, but she accepted Stephanie's hand and shook it. "I'm from New Jersey," she said. "Well, I was, but I've been going to school in Massachusetts for the past couple years. Where are you from?"

[identity profile] batwaffles.livejournal.com 2011-05-07 06:27 pm (UTC)(link)
"New Jersey too. Gotham City, but that doesn't exist in everyone's world, whether or not they come from a world where New Jersey exists," Stephanie said cheerfully; she had a fairly strong grip, but not the kind where she was going out of her way to prove it. ". . . which is why I asked about the confusion, but coming right up to a stranger and asking 'Are you or are you not from Earth?' right off the bat is really rude."

"Faramir told me he was from a different world, but I wasn't sure if he was just pulling my leg," Angelica said. "Do they really have students from other planets here? And...mutants?"

Re: Meet Your Big/Little Sibling (Summer 2011)

[identity profile] batwaffles.livejournal.com 2011-05-07 06:38 pm (UTC)(link)
"Mutants, students from other planets, students from a million years in the past or the future," Stephanie reeled off, ticking them off on her fingers. "Maybe sentient robots for all I know. We specialize in diversity here. And I mean really, really diverse."

Re: Meet Your Big/Little Sibling (Summer 2011)

[identity profile] whitequeensfire.livejournal.com 2011-05-07 06:50 pm (UTC)(link)
"Really?" Angelica squeaked, especially blown away by the mention of the future or the past. "And...everyone's OK with that?" Even at the Academy she had to hide what she was from most of the other students, since only a few of them were mutants.

Stephanie tucked both hands behind her head and leaned back a bit, sort of a 'relaaaaaaaaax, it's all good' pose. "Yup. Well . . . not everyone's okay with it at first, but if you want to stick around in Fandom for a while, you get used to it. Like, I come from a world where we have some people with superpowers -- we call them metahumans -- and other people come from places where there aren't any superheroes at all."

Craziness. What kind of world was that?

[identity profile] whitequeensfire.livejournal.com 2011-05-07 07:12 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh, I won't be here long, just part of the summer," Angelica said. "While my old school is being renovated." However long it took for Emma to bring her home.

"M-metahumans?" she said. "Like mutants?"

[identity profile] batwaffles.livejournal.com 2011-05-07 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
"Kind of," Stephanie said after a moment, thinking of Iceman. "Well, in our world they don't always get their powers genetically, but it's the same kind of thing."

Re: Meet Your Big/Little Sibling (Summer 2011)

[identity profile] whitequeensfire.livejournal.com 2011-05-07 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
"They don't in mine, either," Angelica said softly. "I mean, some people are born with powers, and that's bad, but if they get powers from radiation or something, it's okay."

THE MARVELVERSE WAS NOT LOGICAL, OKAY?

Re: Meet Your Big/Little Sibling (Summer 2011)

[identity profile] batwaffles.livejournal.com 2011-05-07 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Because that made so much sense when you called them something that implied a genetic --

MAKE MORE SENSE, MARVEL. GOD. (Pot, paging kettle . . .)

Stephanie shook her head. "Okaaaaaaaaaaay. I'm not that qualified to debate terminology but I think we're talking about more or less the same thing here. Anyway! That's good. You've got a leg up on some people here who've never even heard of that sort of stuff."

"Why are there people dressed like Vikings here?" Angelica had to ask. She could handle people with powers, so she had to get her brain broken in another way. "Is that the school mascot or something?"

[identity profile] batwaffles.livejournal.com 2011-05-07 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
WTF ICON. Let's pretend it wasn't that one.

"Thaaaaaaat's sort of a long story," Stephanie admitted, scratching at her ear. "Vikings in a spaceship invaded at graduation, and when we woke up the next day we were here instead of outside Lexington Park."

[identity profile] whitequeensfire.livejournal.com 2011-05-07 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
"But we took a bus here," Angelica protested. "I'm sure I didn't fall asleep." True, she'd been engrossed in a book, but it would've been a much longer trip to Iceland.

[identity profile] batwaffles.livejournal.com 2011-05-07 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
"And that I have no scientific explanation for," Stephanie admitted. "Which you'll find out applies pretty broadly to Fandom."

[identity profile] whitequeensfire.livejournal.com 2011-05-07 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
"How many mutants are here?" Angelica asked. "Do you know any? I met someone who said her big brother is a mutant."

Emma had made her promise to be careful about what she was and what she could do, but if everyone was so accepting here, it might be refreshing to be honest that she was a freak, too.

[identity profile] batwaffles.livejournal.com 2011-05-07 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
"I haven't counted, but I know of a few," Stephanie said carefully; she'd only met Iceman as Robin, so she couldn't admit to that. "There's definitely some here."

"D-do they have to stay in a separate building and take special classes?" Angelica asked nervously. She got to mingle with normal students in some classes, but then there were the training sessions with Ms. Frost and the other Hellions.

Re: Meet Your Big/Little Sibling (Summer 2011)

[identity profile] batwaffles.livejournal.com 2011-05-07 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
"What?" Stephanie looked horrified by that idea. "Ohmygod. No. That would be dumb. We all live in the same dorms -- they might room you with a guy, by the way, they did it to me -- and everything. Promise."

Yes, she had her suspicions about Angelica being a mutant already, in between her nervous questions and what Iceman had told her. See? Some of that detective training had stuck.

[identity profile] whitequeensfire.livejournal.com 2011-05-07 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
But Angelica was such a smooth liar, really!

"With a guy?" she said. "I think that would freak my dad out if he knew. But Faramir said Elphaba is a girl."

If she ahd to live with a boy she'd just die.

[identity profile] batwaffles.livejournal.com 2011-05-08 06:39 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, at least she wasn't her boss, who'd probably have been able to find at least five concrete biometric signs of proof that Angelica was lying or hiding something, on sight. It was just a vague guess.

"Well, we've ruled that out, then." Stephanie snapped her fingers. "That's good. Think of it as one less thing to get adjusted to!"

[identity profile] whitequeensfire.livejournal.com 2011-05-08 05:31 pm (UTC)(link)
"What else is there to get adjusted to?" Angelica asked nervously, fidgeting with he gold bracelet on her wrist. "There's not like co-ed bathrooms, are there?"
