Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The weather was nice, the school wasn't currently under attack from forces not of this universe and they were still in Iceland. Oh yeah, it was day one of the rest of the newbies' lives.

Welcome to fandom, kiddos. Try not to trip over left over sombreros from Thursday!

Yeah, hearing his entire name being bellowed into the crowd was a little bit of a surprise. Sam liked his name but he just hadn't heard it yelled that excitedly in forever. Most of the time, people were trying to kill him.

He made his way over towards the voice, wincing at how badly his last name was getting massacred and gave the blonde kid a wave. "Just Sam's fine. It's a lot easier to pronounce. Not a tongue twister and all."

As if it was even possible, Butters' grin grew even bright and he waved excitedly back at his new roommate, bouncing up closer. "A-alright, then, Sam! You can call me Butters. Oh, boy, this sure is excitin', isn't it? Are you excited? I'm sure excited."

"I don't think I'm as excited as you are," Sam said because that seemed a little impossible. "Your head's not gonna explode, is it, Butters?"

He'd heard stranger names so he didn't comment on that. One of his best friend's name was Brid, after all.

"O-oh, man," Butters said, eyes widening a little as he started fiddling with his fingers. "I sure hope not. You know, this one time, my friend Kenny died because he...he just spontaneously combusted, just like that. But, well, that was 'cause he was holdin' in all his farts, on account of him having a new girlfriend and wanting to impress her, so I guess as long as I don't get a new girlfriend and let out all my farts, I should be pretty okay, don't you think?"

Sam...blinked slowly at that. Butters didn't seem like the type to put him on but that story was really freaking out there. And then he realized he'd been asked a question and wasn't sure if he knew the answer.

"Uh, maybe?" The scientific and biological nature of passing gas mostly eluded him. "Sorry about your friend, though. You, uh, don't have to worry about that around me. Let it out all, man. I've smelled worse."

"O-oh," said Butters, nodding, "g-good."

And he would have let one out right there, but, well, it seemed that you could never manage to actually fart when you wanted to, only when you didn't.

But all this talk of farting did remind him of a very important thing he should find out. "O-oh, hey, Sam, you don't know if there's TV here, do you? A lot of the camps I go to, well, they don't let you watch TV, because they think it'll be a bad influence on you and awaken...you know...desires."

"Desires?" Sam repeated and had a feeling he was going to be doing a lot of that when it came to Butters. And, again, he had no idea how to really answer that question.

"Uh, I haven't seen any televisions yet," Sam told him apologetically. "I haven't been inside the dorms but this doesn't seem to be the type of place that wouldn't have them. You might wanna ask someone who isn't as new as you, though. I bet they'd know better than me. All I know is that the dorms aren't made of bamboo."

"Well, yeah, you know...." Butters twiddled with his fingers a moment as if considering telling Sam about some of these desires, but, thankfully, he held back.

This time.

"Boy, I sure hope they do. Me and my good friend Stan, we were hoping there might be TVs so we don't miss the new season of Terrance & Philip. Err...were you expectin' the dorms to be made of bamboo?"

"No, I was making a joke since I can pretty much see the dorms from here," Sam said, pointing a finger in the direction of the very un-bamboo like building.

"It'd be kind of stupid to make a building out of bamboo, wouldn't it? Big fire hazard," he joked, shrugging. And if the dorms weren't made of magic metal, he'd be happy.

"Y-yeah," said Butters, laughing a bit more than he really felt, mostly so that Sam thought that he thought Sam was funny. "Yeah, that'd be real dumb. Bamboo buildings, real stupid! It's a good thing they went with a castle instead! I never went to camp in a castle yet."

"We've got something in common there," Sam said, pulling his bag up further on his shoulder and sighing. "Feels kinda like a fairy tale."

He said that last bit mostly to himself before taking another breath and shaking his head. "I think this place probably has televisions, Butters. If they can afford a castle, they can afford cheap tvs."

"Y...yeah, well," Butters looked a little skeptical, "it isn't like castles are known for havin', y'know, electricity, and runnin' water, an' flushin' toilets, either, but we'll do okay! Why, there was this one time, when Eric Cartman, he made me think the world ended, and that wasn't fun, but I did okay for myself, tryin' to rebuild civilization from the ground up. Y-you're in good hands, Sam, well, let me tell ya! I won't let things get too primitive, and maybe we won't even need TVs. Why, we can put on shows and plays, with costumes and music an' everything, and we'll never be bored!"

Sam had absolutely no idea what was going on with this kid. He seemed earnest and honest enough but some of the things that came out of his mouth were completely illogical and coming from a guy who raised the dead, that was saying a lot.

"So..." What did he even wanna say here? "How did he manage to convince you that the world had ended? You didn't notice buildings and other people?"

"Er, well," Butters frowned a little. "Eric's real good at trickin' people; he's the meanest kid I know! And he told me irradiated zombies were attackin', and so he helped me into a bomb shelter, and there I stayed for a while, and then he blindfolded me when he came an' got me, so I wouldn't see the carnage, and by then, why, he'd locked me in a fridge! When I got out, well, turns out I was in a junkyard, but I thought it was the world all ended and everything, and so, well, I just pulled up bootstraps and...and I got to work at rebuildin' society. It wasn't until a...a lady showed up that I found out she wasn't too keen on...on repopulatin' the earth with me, on account of the fact that, well, the earth didn't need repopulatin' anyway, and Eric jus' wanted to get rid of me so's he could...he could go to Casa Bonita for Kyle's birthday."

Wow. Just...wow. Sam had no freaking idea where Butters had come from and he couldn't help but be morbidly curious. He sounded like he'd been through a lot of bad stuff and managed to still keep a pretty positive outlook. Anyone that could be optimistic about repopulating the Earth had to be a pretty resilient guy.

"And these guys, they're your friends?" Sam asked, frowning at the thought of that. "They sound like they don't treat you very well. You sure they're just not, like, using you?"

"Oh, well, Kyle is," Butters offered, "and Kenny, and Clyde and Token and Craig, and Stan, why, he's here, too, he's my best friend!"

No, Butters, he wasn't.

"But Eric, he's just a jerk. It sure is gonna be nice to get away from him for a while, believe you me!"

"You brought a friend with you?" Well, Sam supposed that would help Butters out since the kid seemed like he was in over his head. That or he was just a really, really good actor.

And Sam thought it best to keep the subject of his two tagging along friends a secret since they were, you know, dead and all.

"Too bad he's not your roommate, right? Guess I'll have to be a decent one for you."

"Aw, shucks, Sam," Butters chuckled, waved a dismissive wave of hand. "I'm sure you'll be a great roommate! I think we'll be really good friends!"
