BWI Portalocity Terminal [Saturday Morning]

Emma had flown with Angelica from Logan Airport in Boston to Baltimore so she wouldn't have to make the entire trip alone, and Angelica was grateful for that. But after a hug goodbye when the time came for Emma's flight back to Massachusetts, Angelica was alone in the lounge, waiting for the bus to Fandom High. She buried her face in a book and tried not to be too nervous about changing schools, counting out the positives. She might make new friends. Empath and Roulette wouldn't be there. She might accidentally fry someone with her microwave powers.

Oooookay, that last one wasn't too positive.

"I'm just going to go ahead and assume 'nub' isn't a good thing," Dave said. He was quick on the uptake.

Sam gave him a "duh" kind of look and a smirk. "Don't worry, though, 'cause it looks like you'll fit right in, anyway."

"Well, as long as I'm with my kind, I should be fine. Nubs do well in packs," Dave said. Just like zebras. Get enough of them together and predators can't tell nerds from dorks from spazzes. "Hi, I'm Dave."

"I don't caaaaaaaaaaaare," said Sam. Then, "I'm Sam."

What? It was only polite to be on a first name basis with the people you were likely to torment.

Maybe that deal with Freddie wouldn't be so agonizing, after all.

"Thanks for the confidence boost. I appreciate it," Dave said.

"It's what I do," Sam said cheerfully.

"Well, at least it'll be a fun summer," Dave said, putting on a big, sarcastic smile.

"That's the spirit!" She aimed a fist at his arm. Not all that gently. "You guys'll have the best AV club, ever."

"Ow," Dave said, taking a step back and rubbing his arm after the contact. "I've never even been in AV club."

If she tried to get him to open up about his actual hobbies, he was going to have to lie. A lot. Or just get punched more.

"Really? I figured all nubs were into that stuff. Right along with Galaxy Wars and video games."

Dave hesitated for a moment before he remembered to lie. "Nope. I can't stand that stuff. I've never even seen that movie."

Sam narrowed her eyes at him, clearly not believing it. "Hmmm. Camouflage, not a bad tactic."

"Thanks," Dave said. "Is it actually going to work?"

"Well, not on me, but I have a finely tuned nub-dar."

"Is there anything I could do to convince you I'm not a nub?" Dave asked. "Hypothetically speaking."

Sam shrugged, thinking about that one. "Ooo, you could beat up a bear."

He was probably hoping for something a bit more realistic than that.

"That's really where the bar is set?" Dave asked. "I think I'll stay a nub."

Sam aimed high. "Your loss."

"Better to lose some pride than my arm to a bear," Dave said.

"The trick is to get the bear's arm before it gets yours."

Sam didn't actually know that.

Probably.

"You don't have any tips on how to do that, do you?" Dave asked. Because of course she didn't.

"What am I, your non-nub trainer?"

"Well, I don't see any other volunteers," Dave said.

"I guess that's just what makes being a nub so tragic."

"I'm crying on the inside," Dave confirmed.
