BWI Portalocity Terminal [Saturday Morning]

Emma had flown with Angelica from Logan Airport in Boston to Baltimore so she wouldn't have to make the entire trip alone, and Angelica was grateful for that. But after a hug goodbye when the time came for Emma's flight back to Massachusetts, Angelica was alone in the lounge, waiting for the bus to Fandom High. She buried her face in a book and tried not to be too nervous about changing schools, counting out the positives. She might make new friends. Empath and Roulette wouldn't be there. She might accidentally fry someone with her microwave powers.

Oooookay, that last one wasn't too positive.

"That'd be the one," Reno agreed, nodding a greeting to the kid as he boarded the bus. "Unless somethin' manages to go horribly wrong between here an' there. But usually that kinda thing at least waits until after the picnic, yo."

Fandom was nice like that.

"So don't crash the bus and we'll be okay," Alex joked. Then he sobered and said, "Please don't crash the bus."

Reno gave Alex a weird little look at that, and then he broke into a grin, biting back a laugh.

"Oh, come on. I'm a better driver than that, yo. I ain't crashed a bus yet unless I really had to, you know."

That made it all better.

Alex gave him a little smile. "Well if you have to, I guess it's okay."

"But until it comes to that, you got my word that I'll keep the bus on the road, at least two wheels at a time, yo."

Because there were plenty of potential sharp turns to be taken at high speeds. Reno had to account for these things.

Oh god oh god they were all going to die. "Right," Alex said. "Does this bus have seat belts?" He just didn't want to die again quite so soon, you see.

"None that I noticed," Reno mused, looking back thoughtfully at the seats. "But I could probably find some duct tape or somethin', if you wanna get someone to strap you down good."

Actually, that wasn't a half-bad idea. Tape all the students in, and he could drive like an even bigger maniac!

"I'll take my chances, thanks," Alex decided. "Are you a teacher? Or do you just drive the bus?"

"Goin' on a year teachin' now," Reno confirmed. "I'm used to teachin' more practical classes, like survivin' the end of the world, and tactics, stuff like that. Takin' it easy this summer and just teachin' kids about the importance of bein' aware of their attitudes in a modern society, yo."

Or, more accurately, the importance of striving to be more awesome than everyone else, without looking like you were striving for it.

"So you're not teaching the class on zombies?"

"Nah. I got my fill of experience with zombies a couple years back," Reno replied with a scoff. "They're stupid, hungry, contagious, an' they smell like shit. If I wanna deal with 'em more'n I already do, I'll go make a few requests from the band at the bar."

Alex wrinkled his nose at him and said, "Gross." He didn't know what to make of that about the bar, though.

"Very," Reno agreed. "There was one invasion I gotta say I was glad to see gone, yo."

And not just because he'd gotten his idiot ass turned into a zombie during that whole mess, either.

"Wait, that actually happened?" So cool.

"Hm? Oh, yeah. That, harpies, goblins... I missed the year that aliens blew up the school at grad, but I was around back when Hades tried to turn the island into an extension of the underworld."

Reno gave a content little sigh.

"Good times."

Reno never claimed to be sane.

"Uncle Hades has enough to deal with, why would he want to do that?" Alex asked, confused.

"Uh..." Reno squinted for a moment. No, he really couldn't pick out the family resemblance.

This kid's hair wasn't nearly on fire enough, for a start.

"I dunno. Maybe it's harder to get a tan down there?"

"In the Elysian Fields it's endless perfect day." It had been nice, but not a forever kind of nice, not for Alex and Ares.

He could make his eyes glow, but that usually signaled that someone's shit was about to get fucked up, so Reno would understand if he didn't.

"... Yeah, there weren't no fields where we had to go diggin'," Reno supplied. He was helpful like that. "Mostly just nasty critters an' lots of dark."

He pursed his lips for a moment. "Maybe we ain't talkin' about the same Hades. I got a version of the guy back where I'm from, too, ain't the same as the one who tried to take the island for himself. Big nasty skeleton-lookin' creep with a huge cauldron."

"...no, that doesn't really sound like him," Alex admitted. "Weird."

"The weird kinda grows on you after a bit," Reno offered, smirking a little. New kids were always so cute. "Just wait until you start meetin' people you know who ain't never met you before. Or your roomie turns into a kangaroo or somethin'."

Reno loved Fandom Island. He wasn't even going to lie about that.

"So this really is a school for weird kids," Alex concluded.

"Yeah, with a handful of real normal ones floatin' around so we can laugh at 'em when we hear their brains snap, yo."

...

Reno was also possibly not the nicest guy on the faculty.

"What kind of teacher are you?" Alex asked, confused.

"You know, I ask myself that all the time?"

Why did they let Reno teach? Why did they let him drive the bus?

"I'm gonna go with the easy answer an' just say I'm the kind with kickass hair."
