BWI Portalocity Terminal [Saturday Morning]

Emma had flown with Angelica from Logan Airport in Boston to Baltimore so she wouldn't have to make the entire trip alone, and Angelica was grateful for that. But after a hug goodbye when the time came for Emma's flight back to Massachusetts, Angelica was alone in the lounge, waiting for the bus to Fandom High. She buried her face in a book and tried not to be too nervous about changing schools, counting out the positives. She might make new friends. Empath and Roulette wouldn't be there. She might accidentally fry someone with her microwave powers.

Oooookay, that last one wasn't too positive.

"I did that for a friend of mine, once. She totally deserved to get that A, though."

"Yeah! And so did I!" Topher exclaimed, glad to have found someone with similar values. "I mean, sure, I never went to that class, but come on. I speak English every day, so obviously I know it."

He rolled his eyes. People were stupid.

"Exactly!" Okay, if Topher weren't carrying around a bunch of wires, he might actually be cool. "And who cares what happened which day in history? It's not like it was last week."

"Exactly!" Clearly, they were brain twins. Which made Sam cool, because Topher was cool. Duh. "School, man. It's the worst."

Except science. He got to blow stuff up for fun.

"Yeah, well, between school and juvie, I do have to pick school."

She got to wear better clothes at school.

Topher whistled. Yikes. Juvie.

"Sucks," he said, shrugging in sympathy. See, Sam, that was alliteration.

Oh sure, get all fancy in the narrative.

"Totally. Momma does not look good wearing an orange jumpsuit."

Topher sized her up.

"True," he conceded.

Very true.

Sam noted the sizing up, and maybe did a little in return, before concluding that she could totally take him if she wanted to.

She was scrappy, that way.

"I think it's the point. Go to juvie, get stuck in bad clothes."

Oh, yes. She absolutely could take him. Topher could lose a fight to a baby shih tzu.

"Just like prep school," Topher lamented. "It's a cruel, cruel choice."

"Wait, this place has uniforms?!" The judge hadn't said anything about uniforms!

"Oh, I'm just assuming," Topher said quickly, holding up both hands. "The last, like, five places I went to had uniforms."

Which explained why virtually all of his clothes were button-down shirts and sweater vests. Ahem.

". . . Five?" That was impressive even to Sam.

Topher shrugged.

"Give or take."

"Wow." That was as many times as Sam had been arrested.

"Yeah." He nodded.

Except Topher hadn't been kicked out for arrest-y things. More like being-rude-to-teachers and not-showing-up-for-class-y things.

Sam did those things, too, but they generally just resulted in detention.

"I tell you right now, I am not wearing any uniforms."

Topher did the sizing-her-up thing again.

"I can believe that," he announced.

Sam was starting to wonder if he was picturing her naked. She whacked her arm out to hit him in the shoulder. "Stop that."

Oh. Oh, wow. That was so not what he had meant. Frankly, Topher was a little afraid of girls. Especially this one.

"Whoa," he said, putting his hands up. "I swear I didn't mean to do that."

But, you know. Now she'd gone and put it in his head.

That made sense. Sam was scary. Just ask Freddie.

"Well, good. I'm not that kind of girl."

Wow, she just sounded almost prissy. She'd have to watch that.

"Oh, believe me, getting that vibe loud and clear," he assured her.

The potential offensiveness of that comment was lost on him, yes.

Sam couldn't decide if she wanted to get angry at that comment or not. Back home, everyone knew she'd beat them up, anyway.

"Good."

Topher nodded.

"Glad we understand each other."

Well. He understood that she was scary, anyway.

Here Sam was, working on her reputation already.

Carly would be so proud.

"Absolutely."
