BWI Portalocity Terminal [Saturday Morning]

Emma had flown with Angelica from Logan Airport in Boston to Baltimore so she wouldn't have to make the entire trip alone, and Angelica was grateful for that. But after a hug goodbye when the time came for Emma's flight back to Massachusetts, Angelica was alone in the lounge, waiting for the bus to Fandom High. She buried her face in a book and tried not to be too nervous about changing schools, counting out the positives. She might make new friends. Empath and Roulette wouldn't be there. She might accidentally fry someone with her microwave powers.

Oooookay, that last one wasn't too positive.

"If I had one, it probably would," she told the guy, looking over at him. Because Kate would make a shitty owner. But at least she was honest about that fact. "I'd forget to feed it."

"Well, at least you don't have one, then," he said, putting a positive spin on it. "Or didn't... used to have one."

Tenses were confusing.

"You okay?"

Kate shrugged. "I'm off to summer school. Whoop-di." Look at all her falsified... and not convincing at all enthusiasm!

"Are you?" Because he was looking at her funny and asking about imaginary dogs.

He waved a hand at the airport. "I'm surrounded by lame high school kids on my way to my sixth prep school."

How okay could he be?

Kate looked the guy over. He didn't seem like the troublemaker sort. Not that sort she'd met, anyway.

"Six?"

Well, he wasn't, really. There was just this thing he had. It was called social awkwardness. And an unfortunate tendency to talk down his teachers. And sometimes make them cry.

"Yeah," he admitted. "And I'm a sophomore."

Which some could call pathetic, but Topher chose to regard as impressive.

"Whose name is?" So what if she hadn't shared her own name yet. That wouldn't deter her.

He raised his eyebrows, then decided to go for it.

"Topher Brink," he said, holding out a hand.

Right, and this was the point where she was supposed to... Oh yeah. Take the hand he'd offered her, and offer up a "Kate," in return. "Daniels."

Since he'd started with the full names, it sounded better somehow to match it.

Well, you know. His full name just had a kind of ring to it. And "Topher" on its own almost sounded like a word.

"So, Kate Daniels," he said, digging a tube of Pringles out of his bag. "Food?"

Weird, tubular food. Which would not stop Kate from peering in it and snagging one. Most people didn't examine their food before eating it. She did.

It looked fine. Oddly uniform, but fine.

"I got beef jerky," she offered. "Actual beef." She was there when it was made, so she could be sure it didn't have dog or rat in. Wasn't that comforting?

Oh, yes. So comforting. Topher gave her a slightly strange look at the disclaimer, then shrugged. "Yeah, let's have it," he said.

Beef jerky was awesome. Even if it did have dog or rat in it. Whatever, he wasn't picky.
