BWI Portalocity Terminal [Saturday Morning]

Emma had flown with Angelica from Logan Airport in Boston to Baltimore so she wouldn't have to make the entire trip alone, and Angelica was grateful for that. But after a hug goodbye when the time came for Emma's flight back to Massachusetts, Angelica was alone in the lounge, waiting for the bus to Fandom High. She buried her face in a book and tried not to be too nervous about changing schools, counting out the positives. She might make new friends. Empath and Roulette wouldn't be there. She might accidentally fry someone with her microwave powers.

Oooookay, that last one wasn't too positive.

"So where are you from?" Alex offered.

Oh thank god. "South Park, Colorado. It's by Denver. You?"

"New York. The Bronx. New Jersey before that." By way of Olympus. Um.

"...Jersey?"

"Yes?" Alex asked innocently.

"You don't have any weird urges to say 'It's a Jersey thing', right?" Because then he'd need to find a gun.

"No," Alex said, "no, I don't think I've ever said that in my life. We only lived there while I was a little kid, though." And then Alex had done most of his growing up to date while he was a prisoner of war being Stockholmed by a crazy Japanese god of evil, yay! Except not so yay.

It could have somehow been worse!

"Good." Stan was still giving him a sideways look. Just in case. "We had a bad experience with Jersey back home."

"I thought you were from Colorado."

"Yeah, Jersey invaded." A beat. "It was apparently a Jersey thing."

Alex wasn't ruling out some kind of insane Jersey invasion he just hadn't heard about, maybe while he'd been kidnapped or dead, because in his universe stranger things had happened but, "But there's like half a country between Colorado and New Jersey."

"They got that far into the country," Stan replied seriously. "Luckily we stopped it."

Or maybe this kid was delusional. "Well, good for you guys!" Alex said, trying to sound encouraging.

Stan shrugged. "It happens."

"Sure," Alex said. "Sure it does." In crazy world.

"...it's the truth. And then they shot Osama bin Laden."

SERIOUSLY.

"I saw that on the news," Alex agreed. "My dad was really excited." Not...exactly for the reasons most people were excited, but that was War for you.

He tentatively, subtly reached out with his power, checking to make sure this guy wasn't secretly another fearless loon like Gorgon. That was the last thing he needed. If he died again his dad would be so mad.

No, but he was absolutely terrified of Christmas Critters.

"Mine was too." Stan rolled his eyes at the mention of his own dad. Because who wouldn't?

Even his greatest fear was bizarre. Not that Alex judged.

Well, okay, he judged a little bit.

"He said it was about time they stopped babbling on about the wedding and all this love and happiness nonsense and got back to the killing." What?

"Did they ever stop the killing?" Stan asked slowly. Because somehow he was up to date on world affairs. Because he'd probably end up in the middle of them.

"Probably not, but, you know. Talking about it more is always good. If you're Dad."

Stan just sighed. "...is your dad Satan?"

Alex stared at him some more. It seemed to be a theme. "No. He's--" Cover or truth? "He's a construction worker. But he used to be in the military. Sort of."

"...riiiiiight," Stan replied. "Look, I don't care who your dad is. But if I end up on some stupid little adventure that takes me to a mystical realm, I'm punching you. I still have flashbacks to Imagination Land."

That could totally happen, but, "I'm not going to just let you punch me, you know?" In fact, attempting to punch him would probably be a mistake.
