BWI Portalocity Terminal [Saturday Morning]

Emma had flown with Angelica from Logan Airport in Boston to Baltimore so she wouldn't have to make the entire trip alone, and Angelica was grateful for that. But after a hug goodbye when the time came for Emma's flight back to Massachusetts, Angelica was alone in the lounge, waiting for the bus to Fandom High. She buried her face in a book and tried not to be too nervous about changing schools, counting out the positives. She might make new friends. Empath and Roulette wouldn't be there. She might accidentally fry someone with her microwave powers.

Oooookay, that last one wasn't too positive.

"Did your mother teach you that too?" she replied, half-amused. "Because then it sounds like she covered all the bases."

"Evelyn taught me the first, Margi the second," Mercy said. "And yeah, I guess between them they did."

Jocelyn's eyes widened. She knew about homosexuality, sure, but it wasn't exactly accepted within the Clave. "...oh. Well...good. Then."

Mercy wasn't quite sure why the girl smelled - startled? She couldn't be the first person in the world to have a biological mother and a foster mother. "Yeah. I still miss Evelyn, but I try and remember what she taught me."

Oh. Right. That made more sense then. Jocelyn nodded, her own good manners finally kicking in. "I share your grief," she said formally, eschewing saying things like 'I'm sorry' by Shadowhunter tradition.

For some reason that formal sentence made Mercy's eyes fill. It had only been 2 years after all and things since then had been... Not. Good. "Thanks," she said, ducking her head to try and hide her emotions.

The other girl's sadness made Jocelyn feel ashamed of her rudeness earlier even as she heard Valentine's voice in her heard mocking her for caring about mundanes.

"My best friend's mother died recently," she offered. "I wish things were different."

"Me too," Mercy said. "And I'm sorry about your friend's mom. It's not fair, but it's life."

Jocelyn shrugged. The idea of death being 'fair' or not didn't quite compute. "It happens," she agreed. "Is that why you're going to Fandom? Because of your mother?"

"Sort of," she admitted. "After Evelyn died... well, I ended up getting sent home to my biological mother's house. Turns out she's got a whole new family. And I didn't know about them and they didn't know about me. They were really great and welcoming, but... I didn't really belong there. How about you?"

"Sucks," she admitted. "Belonging's important." She shrugged. "They said something about the school being weird and wanting someone to see what was with it. I think my mom just wanted to break up me and my boyfriend."

"Yeah," Mercy said. "I had that happen too. The boyfriend thing. His dad told me why he was really interested in me."

Jocelyn raised an eyebrow. "...why?"

"He thought I'd... make a good mother," Mercy said. "And that was it. Didn't love me just... you know."

Which was true as far as it went.

"...there are worse reasons, I guess," Jocelyn considered. Though if Valentine ever said that to her, she'd kill him. "But really, really tacky all at the same time."

"I'm not marrying someone who doesn't love me," Mercy said firmly. No matter how much losing him - or who she'd thought he was - was breaking her heart.

"We're kind of too young to talk about marrying and being mothers anyway," Jocelyn pointed out. "You'll find someone much better for you."

Mercy nodded. Not in the mind of a werewolf born a few centuries ago. "Yeah. And we'll see, I guess."

Not likely though. Not when she couldn't admit to anyone who she was or how she'd been raised.

"Or he'll miss you so much that he'll actually fall in love with you," said Jocelyn's far more romantic side.

"Yeah, not so likely," Mercy said, though the idea made her more than a little wistful.
