BWI Portalocity Terminal [Saturday Morning]

Emma had flown with Angelica from Logan Airport in Boston to Baltimore so she wouldn't have to make the entire trip alone, and Angelica was grateful for that. But after a hug goodbye when the time came for Emma's flight back to Massachusetts, Angelica was alone in the lounge, waiting for the bus to Fandom High. She buried her face in a book and tried not to be too nervous about changing schools, counting out the positives. She might make new friends. Empath and Roulette wouldn't be there. She might accidentally fry someone with her microwave powers.

Oooookay, that last one wasn't too positive.

Jocelyn's face lit up with a smile. It was stupid, but hearing someone connect some of the dots for her people felt almost like home. "Yeah, like that. Not the hideous ones in the Bible though. More like demonhunters." Or exactly like demonhunters but...details.

"... Demonhunters?"

And now Simon looked somewhat dubious. Yes, despite all the weird stuff he'd seen over the last four months or so. The look was cautious though, not meant to offend.

"What - you know about angels but not demons?" Jocelyn asked, more teasing than derisive. It was the nervous-looking part. She couldn't be mean to a puppy.

"I know about demons," Simon replied, perhaps a touch defensively. "Just not --" Anything about what she was talking about. "-- hunters."

"If there wasn't anyone protecting mundanes from demons, the earth would be a wasteland," she pointed out, nearly quoting the same story every Shadowhunter grew up with.

Simon's eyebrows climbed up. That... just didn't compute with him at all. Especially the part about 'mundanes'.

"What are you talking about?"

That effectively answered that question.

Jocelyn shrugged. "That's what the Nephilim do. Kill demons."

"You kill demons," he repeated, flatly. Somehow that did not sound like a power gained from a freak electrical storm. Not unless the demons had come from that too. "I don't -- Are there a lot of them around?"

"You're a mundane," she remarked matter-of-factly. "It's better you don't try." She shrugged. "Sometimes. It depends where you are. There's a lot in London. Mostly the not so nice areas."

"I'm not mundane."

Yes, he left out the all-important indefinite article, there. He was trying to understand, he really was, and to give her the benefit of the doubt.

"Did that happen because of the storm too?" he blurted out after a pause. They both had a lot to learn about alternate universes.

"It's not an insult," she said matter-of-factly. "It's just true. If you're not a Shadowhunter or a Downworlder, you're a mundane." Jocelyn paused as well. "...not unless the storm happened a thousand years ago? What do you mean?"

"It was about four months ago." And it was what had made him... not mundane, in his view. He wasn't so sure he should just come out and say that, however. "What's a Downworlder?"

"Vampires, the fae, werewolves, that sort of thing," she said with a shrug.

"I-- I'm not one of those, no." Which was better than saying those things didn't exist. "So I guess I am a mundane."

Just one that could turn invisible.
