BWI Portalocity Terminal [Saturday Morning]

Emma had flown with Angelica from Logan Airport in Boston to Baltimore so she wouldn't have to make the entire trip alone, and Angelica was grateful for that. But after a hug goodbye when the time came for Emma's flight back to Massachusetts, Angelica was alone in the lounge, waiting for the bus to Fandom High. She buried her face in a book and tried not to be too nervous about changing schools, counting out the positives. She might make new friends. Empath and Roulette wouldn't be there. She might accidentally fry someone with her microwave powers.

Oooookay, that last one wasn't too positive.

'All aboard, yo'?

Mercy shook her head, then grabbed her bags and started up onto the bus. She nodded politely. "Hey."

Reno gave the girl a little nod and a crooked sort of grin. The sort that made most people back in Edge back away slowly.

Welcome to the bus, Mercy!

"Hey there, kiddo," Reno greeted. "Welcome to the best damn bus ride you're ever gonna take, yo." Because it was likely to mostly occur on two wheels. Prepare to leave finger-dents in the seat. "You been on one of these things before?"

Mercy'd been raised with werewolves, so she wasn't phazed in the slightest. And even if you had been, she wouldn't have let him see. Dealing with werewolves really drilled the whole 'never let 'em see you sweat' instinct into you.

She nodded. "Not often, but once or twice when my mom came to visit. And not in a while."

"Oh, yeah? So you ain't from too far off, then. I mean, relatively speakin', here."

She knew what a bus was. Reno was going to take that as a good sign.

"Lookin' forward to attendin' our quaint little school on our island in the middle of nowhere?"

It had Vikings this week! What wasn't there to look forward to?

"Aspen Creek, Mon- " She cut herself short. She wasn't from there. Not any more. "I mean, Portland, Oregon. And, yeah? I guess so."

For what it was worth, Reno hadn't heard of either of those places. And so he just smiled, shrugged, and managed to lean back a little further into his seat. Somehow.

"You guess so?" He laughed and shook his head a little. "You're just sayin' that to be nice, ain't you? Don't gotta worry about that around me just 'cause I'm a teacher, rookie. I know what this is like, believe me."

"Rookie?" Mercy said curiously. He'd called her kiddo and rookie so far and while she didn't exactly mind she wasn't sure if maybe she should.

"I guess. It - I guess it's a good choice for me to get away from where I was. I'm just... feeling a little displaced, maybe?"

"Rookie," Reno replied, waving a hand dismissively. "Don't worry 'bout that one. All the students are, yo. That's just how I roll."

It was a term of endearment. It also meant that if he found out about anyone or anything trying to eat his students, he would probably beat their faces in with a metal stick. Welcome to the rookie club, Mercy.

"And the displaced thing... Hey, you ain't alone in that one, either. We all are, you know? But the place kinda grows on you. I hear plenty of people talk about Fandom like it's their home away from home."

She nodded, feeling unexpectedly warmed by the nickname, then managed a half-smile. "I wouldn't mind finding a home."

Yeah, she left out the 'away from home' part, but it's not like she really had one anymore.

Reno's smile went a little softer. Only for a moment, and only if you knew to look for it. But it did.

"One of those, huh? Been there, too. I hope the island don't disappoint, yo." He offered her his hand. "Name's Reno."

"I guess, yeah," she said softly and took his hand. "I hope it doesn't either. Nice to meet you, Reno. I'm Mercedes. Or Mercy. Whichever you prefer."

"Hey, Mercy works," Reno replied, giving her a quick handshake before returning his hand to where it had been clasped with the other one, behind his head. "The accommodations on the island ain't bad, anyhow. A dorm room to chuck all your stuff in before you all get pointed toward the cabins, yo. Both pretty cozy, if you don't mind sharin'."

She nodded, inwardly pleased that he'd chosen to call her Mercy. "I was prepared for that." Not that she'd had to share a room before she'd gone to her mother's house, but she could adapt. Coyotes were very adaptable. It's why they could survive in the cities and wolves couldn't.

He'd chosen Mercy because it was one syllable less effort, really. Reno was special like that.

"An' it never hurts to be prepared," Reno agreed easily.

Really. It really, really didn't around here.

"I do my best," Mercy said. She'd even made sure to bring Bryan's .444 Marlin and the silver bullets. Just in case, you know?

"Keep on doin' that," Reno noted, "an' you'll do just fine around here. Welcome aboard, Mercy."

"Thanks, Reno," she said, feeling marginally better about this whole thing. At least maybe she had someone she could go ask questions of if she needed to.
