Library, Thursday [4/26]

Cassidy had tea with her in the library today -- with a shield around it so that she didn't spill it accidentally or burn herself. She also had a large thermos with an extra cup that she could call in at any time. Shira had insisted she drink plenty of the tea since she wouldn't stay in her dorm room and rest.

The books needed her, after all. At least, that was Cassidy's argument.

She was in the library with a desk of tea and various books on history and mythologies. She seemed to be more staring into space than reading them, though.

"Then it'll just be other people's sorrow to contend with, and you'll survive, I think," he said, with a brief quirk of his lips. "But keep that chocolate thing in mind."

A horrible thought struck Cassidy.

"You're not going yet, are you?!"

"No ~~though I'm going to be stuck in the GFFA all summer but I don't know about that yet~~," Ender said, easily. "I still have another year to go."

Cassidy looked relieved. "Oh thank the Darkness. I'm not ready to have to say goodbye to you yet."

Ender's particular brand of what he liked to call 'heartless compassion' meant he had no real trouble with the idea of saying goodbye to anyone here - at least nothing that caused him any advance discomfort.

(Barring Ben, but he was trying not to think about that.)

Still, he just smiled a little. "Don't worry, I'm not going anywhere yet," he said. "The full four years, that's my sentence."

She smiled. "Good. I'd hate to lose one of my best friends and a wonderful conversationalist at this time."

"Thanks for the vote of confidence in my conversational skills," he offered, with a little bit of amusement. "My sister insists most of what comes out of my mouth is completely unnecessary." But before that one could become a topic of conversation... "So are you ready for summer?"

"I'm not sure if I am or not," she said honestly. "I'm trying to convince Ranon to let us visit again, but well, that's not going so well. Clayton wants to come visit here."

"Who's Clayton?"

She let out a breath. "My older, over-bearing brother," she said cheerfully.

"Ah, now I remember," Ender said, with a quick smile. "Another one of your army of fussers."

She grinned. "I don't really have an army of them, but Clayton has both fussed and irritated since the day I was born. He raises fussing to a new level. He really gets mad if people upset me -- even if they're telling the truth."

"In other words, if he shows up, you're going to have to make sure we're all on our best behaviour."

Cassidy grinned. "Oh no, don't do that. He'd be convinced that something was wrong because he expects people to get exasperated about me. He just gets cranky if he thinks they're saying the wrong things about me -- which is amusing, really. He can call me an annoying, plain-faced little pest. But if anyone else says that? He wants to fight. Boys are weird."

"People are weird, insane, and frequently mad," Ender corrected lightly. "Protective instincts aren't exactly rational, and we all have them." A beat. "Siblings twice as much."

Well. Some of them. Peter.

"He likes to pretend that he's all about Protocol," Cassidy confided.

"I wouldn't doubt it if he actually was. Protocol can be bent by the clever and the very determined."

"Hmmm, you're right, but it doesn't make it any easier when someone decide to use Protocol to focus completely on you and everything you're doing," she offered.
