Library, Thursday [4/21]

Cassidy hadn't found any unusual behavior among the books when she got in. This was a relief to her. As much as she didn't mind some of the more bizarre things in Fandom, having to stop a war between the books today would have been a little too much for her. She just wasn't feeling like herself today.

Of course, it was probably telling that today she had a couple of books at her desk, but had yet to open any of them.

The library was open and Cassidy was here to help.

After yet another week of everything being almost-but-not-at-all-okay between himself and Ben, Ender was starting to find he was grateful for the friends who lived outside that particular sphere.

So he might have arrived a little early this week, backpack slung over his shoulder. "Cassidy? Are you all right?"

Cassidy looked up from her book that she had yet to open and smiled warmly.

"Hi, Ender. I'm all right." Not really. "I just haven't been sleeping well."

"Bad dreams?" Ender guessed, looking around for a chair. He found one eventually, and pulled it up by where Cassidy was sitting.

How did he guess?

She nodded. "A little bit of that and a little of feeling under the weather. It's possible that I may have caught a cold at some point. If I don't feel better soon, I'll talk to Shira or Karla." Because it wouldn't occur to her to go to the clinic when she wasn't feeling well.

She tilted her head. "And how about you? Are things going the same as usual with you starting out the week with sparring?"

Experience with himself, honestly.

And, well. Ben and he weren't exactly up for their old brand of sparring right now, so it had mostly been theoretical. (And useless, because the theory, Ender already knew.) "Pretty much," he said, evasively. "Far be it from me to fuss, but shouldn't you be resting?"

She gave him an honest, though wan, smile as she pushed her hair back from her face. "It was too quiet in my room," she admitted. "I didn't want to bug anyone to come keep me company, so I decided that I could be here since it rarely requires me to get too physical or use Craft. Well, unless the books are fighting, but they seem to be on their best behavior today."

"Feel free to stop by my room in the future," Ender offered. "I'm in 204, and we have enough excess pillows to give you somewhere comfortable to hang out."

Normally he'd prefer his solitude, but these past few weeks, distraction was a very good thing.

"Thank you," she said, meaning it. "I'm in room 203, so you're right near me and are welcome to come by if you ever would like company."

Funny how she had never noticed how close their rooms were before. There were reasons her brother teased her sometimes about getting lost in her thoughts. She'd be glad to hang out somewhere comfortable where she also felt safe.

"So, are you studying anything interesting this week?"

"We're neighbours, and I didn't even take advantage of it," Ender lamented. "I'm a sorry excuse for a human being."

He looked amused, though, so that was probably a joke.

"And not really. It's finals' week, and I've been holed up inside with my laptop." ...Or elsewhere.

It was a good thing he looked amused or she might have taken exception to him being referred to like that -- even by himself.

"My finals have all been demonstrative," she said with a smile. "It's been pretty enjoyable."

He did think of himself as a generally horrible human being, but he'd never refer to himself like that seriously in front of Cassidy. "Oh?" he asked, smiling. "What've you had?"

She would react very poorly to that since she thought so much of him.

"Fighting With Powers, Chemistry, Home Ec, and What Not To Do In A Fight." She had really enjoyed her classes this semester.

"What were the finals like?" Ender asked, interested.

"We demonstrated what we learned in the Powers class, did a test and then did presentations in Chemsitry." She grinned. "I love that class. I didn't know there were so many ways to blow things up! In cooking we, well, we took ingredients and created a dish and then in Lady Ghanima's class we had to talk about what we learned not to do in a fight." She paused for a moment. "Professor Deadpool has been an interesting instructor."

"Interesting," Ender repeated, "being a nice slang word for 'completely out of his mind'."

"He is rather... odd," Cassidy said, still trying to be polite. "It seems like he could be quite terrifying in a real fight."

She would still bet Lady Ghanima could beat him, though, no matter what.

"He would be," Ender agreed, and he would have been less certain about Ghanima's chances. "Did you learn from him at all?"

"Oh yes," she nodded. "Thanks to him I will never take time out of a fight to try to make witty comebacks, nor will I use knives against someone who can keep taking them from me."

She had also learned some ways of speaking that she was a bit unsure of.

"And Mother Night, he always seems to come back to his feet no matter how hard he gets hit."

No, Cassidy. You are not going to ask him how he does it. You wouldn't understand, anyway.

"That's probably his way of psyching out the enemy," Ender noted. "Effective."

On Cassidy, at least.

"I'm glad that it was a class and I didn't really have to fight him," she admitted. "He's scary."

Oh, very effective.

She smiled. "But, I am glad that he's on Fandom's side in a fight. I think. That is, I think he's on Fandom's side."

"Deadpool's on Deadpool's side," Ender noted. "But he has his family here, so I think the two are pretty much indistinguishable at the moment." He paused. "So what was your cooking project?"

"Roasted chicken and rice."
