Myths and Legends of the Deep {Thursday, Period 2}

Summer waited until her class settled in, before she began the lecture. "Hey guys, I apologize for having to handwavily cancel class before now. Things came up but everything is settled now. So, let me make up for that by covering a couple of topics today."

Summer passed around a handout that contained information on mermaids and naiads.

"It's said that while at sea, many sailors would see mermaids surface near the ship. Legend has it that a mermaid is a beautiful, alluring woman, from the waist up. From the waist down she has the body and tail of a fish, complete with scales. It is said that female mermaids sing with a voice so enchanting that men cannot resist it. Some mermaids are kind and gentle but some are said to be cruel. Merfolk from the Irish tradition, called Merrow or Muirruhgach always appeared before storms."

She paused, wondering what her students thought of mermaid legends.

"Now, naiads are also known as water nymphs. Unlike mermaids, naiads are depicted as having a human form. They are found in fresh water and they can survive as long as that source doesn't dry up. Naiads are from Greek mythology. It's said they preside over fountains, wells, springs, streams and brooks -- all sources of fresh water," Summer explained.

"Now, that's what I've gathered from mythology. What about you? What do you know about naiads and mermaids?" She was curious to hear what her students had to say.

[OCD coming up!]

Oh what do you know, naiads and mermaids were always something Luke wanted to cross off on his list of species he wanted to bang. He wasn't sure how the mermaid thing would work though.

So that's what he'd be thinking about during lecture. At least it was on topic.

George raised a hand.

"I heard that mermaids were just ... sailors who were fantasizing about seals," she said. "And had been out to sea way too long."
