Library, Thursday [4/7]

Cassidy hadn't been feeling well most of the week, so she had stayed in her room. However, she seemed to be feeling a little better today, and that's why she was early for her shift.

She straighted up everything she was supposed to take care of -- and made sure that all of the books were behaving themselves. Once she was satisfied with that, she selected a book on self-defense, one on languages and one on mythologies of the world and returned to the desk.

The library was going through one of it's more peaceful moments, it seemed.

She grinned. "Thank you. Because that would indeed mean that there is something seriously wrong with me."

"I wouldn't say 'seriously wrong'," Ender replied, "But maybe a little too integrated into 21st century society."

She laughed, leaning her chin on her hand. "And that would be a good example of taking understanding of this society a little too far."

"Oh, I don't think you can take understanding of anything too far," he said, easily. "But submerging yourself - that's another discipline completely."

She nodded. "I'm pretty sure that I wouldn't want to submerge myself so far that I find something like that show entertaining and accepting, though. There was something about it that made me feel a little sad for the girls not selected."

"Ah, but the girls not selected can go on and pick their partner themselves," Ender noted. "Rather than because some TV popularity contest told them to."

"But how do they know that the male they pick wants them for the person they are, or because they were on a TV show?"

"I'm afraid that's just one we figure out on a case-by-case basis."

Paradoxically, talking about something like this managed to jolt Ender into a frame of mind more inclined to deal with Peter than with anything island-borne, for which he was grateful. Or maybe not so paradoxically, considering.

"It still seems sad for those ladies." She thought for a moment. "In one way, it's almost like Queens choosing their Court, except the males that present themselves know that if they're not chosen for the First Circle, they are still usually going to have a place elsewhere in the Court."
