Extreme Physical Education | Wednesday | Period 1

Once again, the class was in the Danger Shop. There were several piles of different things in the room today: ski equipment, helmets, goggles, and cold weather gear. That might have given an indication as to what was coming.

"Today," Fraser started, smiling, "we're going to be going cross country skiing. Cross country skiing is a winter sport in which participants propel themselves across snow-covered terrain using skis and poles. It's different from a lot of the skiing you might see on television in that you don't go down steep slopes or over moguls or anything like that. It's a straight shot across flat land which makes it a sport of endurance and stamina."

Fraser walked over to the pile of ski equipment. "Cross country skiing requires skis, of course, ski poles, bindings, and waxes. That's in addition to the cold weather gear of the ski boots, helmets, jumpsuits and goggles to keep warm. You're all going to be required to wear those and there are no exceptions."

Now, with that said, Fraser demonstrated how to put on the skis and how to propel yourself with the poles. It wasn't a very graceful technique but it worked. With that done, he got the sim going, revealed a beautiful stretch of snowy area. "Get into your gear, put on your skis, and get to hoofing it!"

Cross country skiing required more coordination than Kyle had at first. He was used to his legs moving where he wanted them to move, not being weighed down by heavy boots and awkward skis. He couldn't get the rhythm right. "This isn't working."

Snow! Skis! The glee radiating off her wasn't quite as palpable as it had been with the dogs, but it was close.

But Makita was making confused faces at the helmets, jumpsuits and goggles. Seriously? What were those even for? She had a perfectly warm hat, and a coat. And how did people even see out of those googly-things?

His Wolf Den training had prepared him to be able to move while being weighed down by excess gear and even though it took a few attempts to get used to the movement he eventually got the hang of the sport.
