The English and French-language history books were fighting today.

William made a few cursory attempts to resolve the situation peacefully, but became somewhat distracted by the thought of whether or not they were re-enacting any specific conflict, or just bickering as is the wont of the French and English.

When the English books suddenly started managing to scale the sides of the desk the French books had gathered on- a seemingly impossible task- he had his answer.

"The War of the Conquest then, is it?" he said to himself, keeping an eye on the books to make sure they didn't follow history too closely. He didn't want to have to explain to the librarian that the books had killed each other.

Who is technically anglophone, but raised in a francophone part of the country, so has somewhat of a mixed perspective of the war.

Elphaba walked in, purpose in her every stride. She was a girl with a mission.

"I need to know where they books for children are kept," she said, once she reached where William stood. Her manners did catch up with her, however, so she added "If you please, of course."

"Good day to you as well, Miss Thropp," William couldn't help but commenting.

Elphaba ducked her head for a moment. "Yes, sorry," she said. "It is good to see you as well. I just... I have been flustered by something and I supposed I've been a bit overly focused."

"It is a situation I've found myself in on... more than one occassion," William admitted with a wry smile, "so I suppose I can hardly truly find you at fault for it. Now, I believe you said something about children's books?"

[and I'm about to run out for groceries for a couple hours, so pings will be slow till I get back!]

"Thank you," Elphaba said. "Yes. I've found myself vexed by a story of my world, actually. Kate had told me it was a story for children here, but now I've seen a film of it and it's quite worrying."

It had gotten under the poor girl's skin, that was for sure.

"Your world?" William echoed. "Oz?" He seemed to remember her mentioning. "I can't say I've heard such stories, myself." But then, he was nearly a century and a half out of date.

"Yes," Elphaba said. "It seems the story features an..." She huffed a breath through her nostrils. "Evil green witch."

"Are there any other green people in Oz at all?" William asked. He couldn't imagine Elphaba being perceived as evil, after all. Headstrong and opinionated, he would say from their interactions, but not evil.

"I've never heard of a single other one," Elphaba said. "It's what makes me so ostracized, back in Munchkinland. I'm too unusual even to Munchkins."

"Are you certain you want to read it?" William asked gently.

Elphaba paused, then her face scrunched a bit. "I thought I was," she said. "Until you asked me. Do you think it would be wise?"

Perhaps she ought to consult with Karla, as well.

Just mind you don't get cornered by the books attempting the re-enactment of the Battle of the Restigouche (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_the_Restigouche).

Who is American and thus probably knows the war under a different name.

The French and Indian War? Yeah, Henry ... would actually be a little surprised to learn it had other names.

Which didn't stop him from finding a good vantage point and watching the books go at it. His hands twitched with the urge to grab a few of the rarer French volumes out of the conflict before their covers got torn. If any of the books turned out to be casualties, he would be most put out.

I got to go to the Plains of Abraham/Battlefields Park last year. It was awesome.
