Getting Out of Tight Situations- Period 5- Class #9

Today class was going to look a little different. Blame the teacher's brain having very good reason to think back to stories she'd heard growing up. There weren't any big scary monsters around at the moment, as that gate was safely closed, but that would change.

"Welcome to a rancor pit," Jaina greeted them. "For those of you who don't know what a rancor is, you're going to find out in a minute. I'll also add the disclaimer that despite what you're going to see in here, I have a friend who insists they're just fine, and people ride them on one of her homeplanets. You tend not to find those particular rancors in places like this, though. You're going to face off against it one at a time, and you're able to use whatever you can find, whatever you have on you, or any powers you think you can use safely here. You have to either defeat it or get away, and if the rancor's going to win, the simulation will end and that'll be the end of your turn. Good luck."

Bobby was... trying to convince himself it wouldn't be that bad. He'd fought worse, after all, and this was just a simulation.

. . . yes. Yes, Stephanie did in fact have a very bad feeling about this, because when it came down to her versus a giant monster thing there were identity-compromising issues lurking riiiiiiiiiight around the corner, weren't there?

Maybe she could pass it off as dumb luck and resourcefulness? She wasn't exactly going to be flinging around Batarangs in there or anything.

Ender blinked, and wondered if 'Ben nearly got me eaten by one on Dathomir' wasn't technically a good excuse to skip this exercise. (He'd mind the 'killing the rancor' more than 'getting killed by a rancor' in this scenario, he suspected.)

Cara looked far, far too cheerful at the idea of fighting something big, ugly and dangerous.

Did simulations have to include the scent? Seriously? That thing was foul.

Jake was pulling off his shirt and kicking off his shoes as he waited for his turn. The jeans would go, too. Shame, he liked those boxers.

Ben's hand shot into the air. "If I do this faster than Dad did, do I get a prize?"

Brat.

If Bruce had his equipment, this would be simple. And that's why he appreciated this challenge.

It kind of made him wish he had set something up with sharks and bears last week, though.

Even though she knew it was a simulation, Alex still had an uneasy feeling about the exercise.

She had no idea if any of the spells she knew would work, but she was going to try all of them.

His 'bump of trouble' was acting up in a way that it normally did not during training. This did not bode well.

Ender had practically all of his instincts screaming at him to use his environment to put an end to the rancor threat once and for all. He ignored them. One, this was a simulation, so even if he did get eaten he'd come out alive; two, if nothing else, this was a good opportunity for creatively thinking around his instincts.

He had no special powers to avoid the creature, but he remembered the one from Dathomir. He managed to distract it for long enough to find a way out, but it got him in the end.

He'd probably spend the rest of the day flashing back to the Giant. Simulations. Most of his nightmares came from simulations.

It took time, several makeshift weapons, and Cara ended up covered in a disturbing amount of holographic gore, but in the end it was Cara-one, rancor-nil.

[identity profile] need-no-moon.livejournal.com 2011-03-21 04:23 pm (UTC)(link)
The sad part was that even if this hadn't been a simulation, Jake would be doing the exact same thing.

As the gate in front of him opened, Jake changed quickly and moved towards the side of the gates. It was big, but Jake had speed and he instantly charge, snapping at the rancor's ankle and jumping back at once.

A while and a couple of throwns against the walls later, the rancor went down in a loud crash and Jake was a rather smug wolf.

Ben had heard about this scenario a lot as a kid--it had been one of his favorite bedtime stories (yes, he was odd)--but he felt like it would be cheating to do exactly what his father had done.

Besides, he had no interest at all in getting lifted up by the thing to shove a bone in its mouth and get a big ol' dose of nasty rancor breath.

Sorry, Tenel Ka, they weren't that appealing.

Ben ended up leading the creature on a little chase (a very cramped little chase) before triggering the gate closed with the Force to crunch the rancor's head.

It was weird to think that that hadn't been his father's first instinct. Imagining his father so young that he didn't immediately reach for a solution with the Force was not something Ben was accustomed to doing.

In the end, Stephanie was bruised, scratched up, desperately in need of a shower, but victorious, thank you very much.

Ha! Take THAT, you big disgusting rancor thing!

It'd taken a lot of yelping, ducking, scurrying, pitching rocks, diving, taunting the thing, and finally tricking it into charging her and running headfirst into the wall, but she'd gotten away.

And could probably, if anybody asked her, pass it off as new and fun practical applications of gymnastics and varsity softball experience. Whew.

So, yeah. Not using his powers meant Bobby had to resort to more conventional methods of monster-defeating, but it wasn't exactly like he was new at this.

"The bigger they are, the harder they blah blah blah, Bobby Drake is the best," he declared smugly, poking the unconscious hologram (could a hologram be unconscious?) with one foot.

Someday, she'd "bloom" and have all those nifty svetocha skills to call on. But for the moment, even though she'd put up a good fight, Dru was Rancor chow.

Last time something like this happened, Jimmy the Hand had a magic hammer on his side.

This time, he had only his wits and the objects in his pockets. It was a longer fight, but same outcome: James 1, Giant Beastie 0.

Re: Fight a rancor!

[identity profile] willbethenight.livejournal.com 2011-03-22 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
It started with a few precision rock throws to the eyes to temporarily blind the rancor. From there, Bruce darted in quickly several times to pound rocks into the rancor's knees, eventually crippling it. After methodically taking out the rancor's sight and mobility and only taking a few nasty glancing blows himself, Bruce stood outside of the beast's reach as it flailed wildly. Something that big would heal eventually if its owner gave it any kind of care, but for now, it was harmless.

"Well, this is familiar," Ender said, shooting her a wry look.

He was clearly spending way too much of his time around Skywalkers and Skywalker-derivatives.

Bruce hadn't. But he was thinking that maybe he should start bringing his utility belt to class. It would probably be bad TA form to get expelled for carrying that many weapons into a classroom, though. Oh well.
