Library [03, 20]

Things had been... quiet, this week. Which certainly seemed like a nice change of pace, so far as Jonothon was concerned. And he really didn't seem to be in any hurry to change that fact, deciding to take things easy today in the library, re-shelving books and dusting.

Now, if only the books would stop un-shelving themselves every time he turned his back to dust.

Ah, the best laid plans of mice and mutants...

Squall gave him a thankful little smile, nodded, and headed that way.

"Rinoa," he answered. "She..." He trailed off. How much did Jono know about everything they were going through?

"Ultimecia," he started again. "The Sorceress from the future..."

Then he trailed off again. Good start.

Well, he'd given Jono a few names. That was certainly better than a kick in the teeth that he didn't have, right?

//There's a Sorceress from th'future, doing something to Rinoa?//

Taking the two half-sentences that Squall had given him and squashing them together seemed like a decent way to start, yes. It was like verbal mathematics.

Squall nodded. "There's a Sorceress in the future who has a machine that lets her send her mind into the past -- I mean, the present." English didn't really have the vocabulary for discussing time travel very well. "Her past, our present. She was controlling Adel. She's trying to control Rinoa."

English was a tricky enough language without referring to then-and-now situations. Jono had wrestled with that one since coming to Fandom, being from the mid-90s as he was.

//Well... That's no good.// Wonderful deduction, Jonothon. //What do we do about it?//

"Stop her," Squall answered definitively. Stop her a lot. "...As soon as we figure out how to get to her."

And until then? Sit around and feel helpless, basically.

"Can I count on you?"

//Absolutely, mate. If it comes down to a repeat of what went on with Adel, I'll follow you right along to that point, if need be, and beyond.//

So, apparently there was something he could do beyond blowing himself up. Sure, Jono.

//I...// He hesitated, and then shrugged, shoving his hands into his pockets. //We won't lose Rinoa. We won't let it get to that point.//

He knew what it was like, watching somebody he cared for slipping away into something that was well beyond them. There was no way he was going to let Squall go through the same thing, if he could at all help it.

"I'll die before I let that happen!" Squall agreed. He was going to save Rinoa, whatever it took. No matter what the consequences.

Of course, he could admit that blind optimism and determination weren't always enough. "But if we lose her," he added softly. "If she turns against everyone..." If it came down to choosing between the fate of the world and the lives of all his friends on one hand, and Rinoa's life on the other... There was only one thing he could do, really, and it wasn't what Rinoa had asked him to do in that situation. "...I'm sorry."

Jonothon winced. But he nodded.

//I know.//

Again... he'd been there. If he'd been in control of himself at any one of a dozen moments after Raven had given in to her demonic side, he might have chosen the same. And to this day, he still felt a pang of regret that he hadn't accepted Didi's offer to join her.

Hindsight. Wonderful thing.

//I know, mate.//

Squall had figured Jono might understand. He didn't really understand it himself.

"But it won't come to that!" he reasserted. "I won't let it!"

The "won't" was accompanied by an emphatic hand slicing through the air, which thumped into a shelf and knocked some books onto the floor.

Jono looked down at the books for a moment, ascertained that they'd been mis-shelved in the first place, and then shrugged his shoulders.

//We won't. I already told you as much, mate. Rinoa's coming back with us. Not some psychotic bint from th'future with a five-syllable name.//

Squall nodded, and stared down at the books for a long, long time.

"What have you got on time travel?" he asked. "Or Sorceresses?"

Jono glanced down the aisle, and then lifted a shoulder.

//Probably not much on Sorceresses as you'd know them,// he noted, //but then, I've been surprised by th'books here before. Time travel should be far simpler to dredge up. People on the island have dealt with it on more than one occasion, after all. C'mon, mate. Let's see if we can dig something up for you.//

Squall nodded.

"Thank you."
