Library, Thursday [3/17]

Cassidy hadn't walked in to any merry little book wars this morning and for that, she was very grateful.

She shelved books and then cleaned up anything that looked out of place. Once everything was straightened up, she went to certain sections with a single minded determination.

Once she got back to the desk, she had a book on baking, one on chemistry, one on Latin and one on Tai Chi.

Peace reigned in the library today and Cassidy was cheerful as ever.

Probably because she hadn't yet had anything to drink today. She was blissfully ignorant about today's holiday.

"Because it's been a few years since the last time I've had self-defense training," Ender said, a little wryly. "I thought it was time to brush up. Just as a precaution."

Cassidy smiled slightly and showed him the Tai Chi book she was trying to study.

"I've never had any training like that, but I've realized that I need it. I can't be the kind of Queen I want to be if I always rely on others to protect me."

"The Pacifism teacher thought aikido was a good, non-aggressive option," Ender offered. "It's all about disabling an attacker."

"Akido?" Cassidy questioned. "I like the sound of that. I don't plan to go around attacking people, but it would be nice to have a way to defend myself. Mr. Genesis was teaching me to use my powers by blending certain aspects of them together before he left." She wrinkled her nose. "I held a sword for the first time yesterday. I was abysmal with it."

"Any weapon takes some getting used to," Ender said. If anyone knew that, it was him. "So don't let that stop you if you want to use it. But if you have a particular goal in mind for fighting, you should figure out the best weapon for it-- a sword means you have an intent to kill, or at least maim."

She frowned and then shook her head. "I don't think I could do that to someone unless they were trying to hurt one of my people. Maybe a knife or a crossbow? It would allow me to defend myself enough to get away -- and possibly disable the attacker, too."

"It can be just your body, too, like in aikido," Ender said, "Of course, you've got your Craft, too-- you don't have to rely on anything as crude as a lethal weapon if you don't want to."

She took a small breath, worrying her bottom lip with her teeth. "But there are times that I can't use my Craft and it would be in those times that I need to have another way to defend myself."

"Then aikido would be a good option," he said, quietly. "Maybe the staff, if you're looking for a weapon. It diminishes the risk of accidentally killing someone."

Ender wasn't letting himself anywhere near that unless he absolutely had to, either.

Cassidy nodded, relieved that he hadn't asked why she wouldn't be able to use her Craft. Then again, maybe it was a conversation he had already had with Karla.

"Akido and the staff really seem to be more suited for me," she agreed. "I don't know what I would do if I accidentally killed someone when all I was trying to do was get away safely."

Ender knew what he would do. He'd already done it twice, though his goal had been to stop the violence in the future, too. "Let's hope you don't find out," he said, after a moment.

She nodded. "I hope I never do find out, but I'm not so naive as to believe that the possibility isn't there," she sighed. "I will definitely be looking into akido, though. I wonder if I could find someone here to train me in it."

"If not, there are classes in Baltimore," Ender offered. "I saw a few while I was exploring that option myself."

"I haven't really explored much off of the island except for the places Lady Ghanima took us during classes last term," Cassidy said thoughtfully. "It would definitely be a good reason to."

"I don't think it's a bad thing to try and acquaint yourself to a different culture, either," Ender said, with a little smile. "Insight into the alien mind is rarely a bad thing for a leader."

"I would have to take someone with me or Shira and Elle will have fits," she mused. "But it really would be nice to get an idea of places that exist here in this world and maybe better understand things."

"I've got no doubt it might be an interesting experience for Shira, too," he offered, "Is Elle from this Earth?"

Cassidy nodded. "Elle is from this Earth, as far as I know. I think Shira would appreciate gathering more information about this world as I would." Because letting those three loose alone anywhere in this world was a wonderful idea. "And I know that Shira would be relieved about me learning something in order to defend myself."

That's saying that you'll ever be let out of her sight once you set up your Court, Cassidy.

"Then I'd suggest that to keep them from fussing at you, you might as well drag them both along," he said. "It's efficient, if nothing else."

Cassidy nodded. "You have a very valid point. They can't get riled up about me going off somewhere if they are going off with me."
