The Science of Psionics, Wednesday

"We're going for a more practical lesson today," Kerrigan spoke. She was standing in the Danger Shop again; this time, the world around them looked like a giant maze. The only thing that jumped out was the rack of suits standing by the side. "There are two applications of telekinesis that are interesting to explore live. Barriers and propulsion. The ability to create a barrier is rare among Terrans back home - it takes a great deal of power."

She, as recently displayed, had to make absolutely no effort at all to do it.

"The Protoss, however, have perfected it, especially when creating a mechanical force field isn't possible. Their barriers can protect their entire bodies. Otherwise, they do what it says on the tin: it's a concentrated effort of psionic power projected around them. It's sustaining the barrier that takes up most of the power, which is why they can only last for so long, especially when someone is shooting at you."

"As for propulsion, we have animals back home that have evolved the ability to use psionics to move." Well, force-evolved. Thank you, Zerg genetic engineering. "They can only produce a small amount of psionic power, but it's all telekinetic. That means they can use the power to push their relatively light bodies up into the air, and move them in whatever direction. However, they don't exactly achieve high speeds - if they did, they'd run out of power fairly quickly."

She glanced over the class. "Some of you might already have powers like this," she said, "Some of you don't. Those of you who don't-- I'd like you to take one of these suits. They can grant you a barrier for a brief period, but you'll find it a drain on your concentration. They also simulate the kind of psionic power you need to briefly propel yourself, be it forward or upward, with the same drain." She gave the entrances to the rest of the maze, which were all around them, an idle gesture. "Pick a partner, then pick an entrance. You'll find that some corners have turrets in them which will stun you if they hit you. Somewhere at the end of these paths is the exit. Find it, and you can leave. If you don't, you'll be able to leave at the end of the class.

"Get on with it."

It's brief this time.

Raven hadn't slept well after watching the movie yesterday. That had been a mistake that brought unpleasant dreams. She was definitely going to stick to just watching horror movies with Jono.

As you do. The suits are black, and relatively form-fitting.

Raven eyed the suits. She'd depend on her Soul-Self, thank you, but she wouldn't turn down a partner.

"Hi!" Alice said cheerfully. What? It was Alice. Her picture was damn near next to cheerful in the dictionary.

Raven had no idea Alice was a vampire ~~god, Raven!~~, so she smiled back at the other girl. "Hello," she said pleasantly. "Would you like to attempt this assignment together? My Soul-Self will shield us both."

Oh, that sounded good. Because even if the suit was form-fitting, it didn't exactly look like something Alice wanted to wear.

But still.

"Soul-Self?" she repeated, tilting her head curiously.

"I am able to manifest my soul in the physical world," Raven explained. She concentrated for a moment, summoning up the black shadow-raven form of her Soul-Self to lift from her shoulders and hover above her.

"I have used it to shield myself from physical attack, and if you stand with me it will protect you as well," she said.

"Does that affect your concentration like the suits would?" Alice wondered as she moved to stand with Raven, because she could be kind of a geek like that sometimes.

"Not at all," Raven ~~bragged~~ said. "I am able to focus my consciousness in two places at once, where my physical body is, and wherever I have sent my Soul-Self. I had been taught that I was limited to five minutes time of separation, but I have exceeded that in the past. I do not know if I have any true limit."

"That's fascinating," Alice said, still curious. But not everybody liked a thousand and one questions fired at them -- imagine that! -- so she settled for asking, "Have you always been able to do that?"

Well, at least it was only one more question.

"I was taught when I was a very young child to separate my soul from my body," Raven said, showing no sign that the barrage of questions bothered her in the slightest. "So I have been able to do so most of my life, almost as long as I can remember."

"That must've been... a lot to grow up with."

They'd get to work eventually. No, really.

"My life in Azarath was devoted to studies such as that," Raven said. She waved her hand toward the maze. "We had no scenarios such as this, however."

She tilted her head curiously. "Where are you from?"

Emma had no qualms about stripping down and changing into the suits. It was for science!

Also, she knew she looked good in form-fitting clothing, and Emma was wonderfully vain.

Karla gave Emma a cheerful wink. "Partner up?" she suggested.

"Only if we cheat horribly," Emma agreed, equally cheerful. "I doubt either of us is going to find this a drain on our concentration."

"Shields and airwalking?" Karla asked. "I think we can handle that."

Helen suited up and looked around for a partner.

Scully suited up, looking slightly uncomfortable and uncertain about this exercise. Being one of the only ones without any power at all made for an uncomfortable approach to this.

Cally didn't might the fit of the suit; it wasn't so different from the everyday flightsuits of her own century. The flight -- the actual flight, even if it was just hovering -- that was a little more disconcerting, and something she found herself experimenting carefully with before she considered venturing into the maze.

It's got high hedges for walls, and you might run into turrets at the end of, or in the corner of, paths. Maneuver your way through the maze and try to get to the exit with your partner.

Though probably only at the start and the end of the class, unless you track her down in the maze.

If you got lost in the maze, Emma was not going to come rescue you, so you'd have to catch her before or after class.

She's paying very close attention to you all, children.

*flops* Day off, I think I shall spend you playing Dragon Age 2.

That is a very good way to spend a day off! *is biased*

IT IS.

Though I still haven't made it to the Deep Roads, which means my BFF is going to mock the crap out of me at project today.

Len's day off, I think you suck for falling on my monthly board meeting day.

If it helps, I'm pretty sure Len's day off stole my brain yesterday, so you would've just wound up talking to a drooling DA2 zombie anyway.
