Ethics Class [Thursday, March 3, 2011, 1st period]

When coming up with lesson plans Anakin tended to draw on his experiences in the latter part of the Clone Wars for the midterm subject matter. With Leia still on the island, that wasn't exactly a safe area for him to explore right now.

Anakin paced the cramped, dirty quarters of the ship the students found themselves aboard in the Danger Shop. "When I was thirteen years old," he said, "and had built my first lightsaber, my master and I were aboard a diplomatic vessel when were attacked by a T'surr slaver named Krayn." He waved his hand and the giant blue alien appeared in the center of the room. "That's a T'surr. Our job, as outlined by my master, was simple: disable Krayn's ship and return to our own, then continue onto our actual mission."

He held up a finger, and his voice became more passionate: "However. Krayn was a slaver, and had been for almost a decade. He had ruined countless lives, had raided slaves from a multitude of systems--" including taking people Anakin had known on Tatooine, but he wouldn't be mentioning that. It had informed his own choice in this matter, but wouldn't affect how the students thought, "--and his slaves were used to process spice: itself an illegal, dangerous narcotic in our galaxy, which had made him very, very rich, and extremely powerful. Your choice in the assignment today is simple: follow your master and disable the weapons systems of this ship and escape, or break off on your own and try to track down Krayn and free the slaves on this vessel."

With a gesture from Anakin, lightsaber hilts appeared in the air above each student. "Remember what you have learned about the dangers of anger and pride. Choose wisely. May the Force be with you. You may pair up with a fellow student if you'd like."

Rinoa had never been good at following orders. And there were people who were enslaved on this ship. Realistically, she should have tried to change the system as a whole, instead of going after a single slaving freighter, but ... realistic was not really her strong suit.

She tore off in the direction of the slaves.

She stopped, turning back towards the figure who was supposed to be her master.

"There are people enslaved here," she said. "Why aren't we going after them?! We're supposed to help people, aren't we?"

... Oh. That was actually a good point.

"Can't we ... put them in charge of this ship?" she asked. "They can pilot it to ... to ... somewhere safe. We can't just leave them here."

"But ..." She folded her arms and stamped her foot on the ground. "Don't you care!? We're here and they're gonna be slaves and -- and we're just supposed to go, hey, we're busy, it's not our mission to care!?!"

Rinoa's skills lay more in the 'childish' realm than 'irritating.' Although there was some considerable overlap, obviously.

"We ... we could ask them," Rinoa suggested. "I mean it can't hurt to go ask them if they can fly a ship. Can you fly a ship? We have a mission, but they didn't say, 'Absolutely don't help any of those poor slaves,' did they?"

"Okay!" Rinoa said. She was absolutely viewing that as a victory. "Well, then! They probably assume if we stumble onto some slaves, we'll free them. We're clever that way. So let's go talk to the slaves and just see if it's even plausible."

Rinoa didn't need to be told twice. She turned and was moving as fast as her legs could carry her.

It occurred to her, on the way, that she wasn't sure if the slaves spoke the same language as she did, or how they would know she was friendly, but she was going to figure that out once she actually reached the slaves. She didn't have much time. She'd have to hope.
