Library, Thursday [3/3]

It was peaceful in the library so far this morning.

Cassidy had done the rounds and hadn't found any books trying to make war on each other, so she was going to count this as a good thing.

After shelving the returns, she made her way back to the front desk. With her was a book on hand to hand combat and a book on Tai Chi. There was reason for her book choices, even if she had yet to say the reasons out loud.

She was however, looking up each time the door opened and was cheerfully ready to assist.

There didn't seem to be any book wars today.

She was watching everything going on around her, today. Every so often she will flip through the books in front of her.

Ender was here with an actual purpose this week - he had to find and pick up some books for Karla. But after his past two visits, and his conversation with Karla in Hawaii, he figured he might as well get up to the desk first. "Hey, Cassidy," he greeted, warmly. "What are you working on?"

Cassidy looked up and smiled at Ender happily. She was coming to enjoy their weekly talks.

"Hi, Ender. I'm doing well. How about you? How was the vacation?"

"Quiet, informative, but mostly warm," Ender said, wryly, "But I can't complain about that. Still, I'm happy to be home and back to work." And... well aware of how much that made him sound like a nerd, but he didn't really care. "How about you?"

"Glad to be back at school," she admitted. "I went home to Dharo for a few days with Elle and then we went to visit Shira and Ranon." Her forehead creased. "Only, it was too dangerous for me to actually go to their home, so we met in what was considered by Ranon to be a safe and neutral location."

He gave her an interested look. "Trouble?" he asked. "Is Shira from Dharo as well?"

Cassidy shook her head. "No, Shira is from Terrielle. It's... it's not safe there for those like me. It's not really safe there for Shira, either, but it's her home."

Ender digested the new information. "I've heard stories about Tereille," he volunteered, at last. "I thought that realm was closed off?"

"I didn't know the Realm was even real until Shira came here and I met her." Cassidy explained. "I had read about Terrielle and had heard things, but that was only in books in stories. Then I met Ranon, and he's really bossy... like almost every other Warlord Prince."

"So their people are not as different as you'd thought," Ender surmised, thoughtfully. "What was it like?"

"I'm not sure," she said with a frown. "Ranon and Shira both declared it too dangerous for me to go into Terrielle to go to the Reserves. They met up with us at one of the borders." She chewed on her lip. "Karla had told me before that she had heard bad things that worried her about Terrielle. Ranon said that I was not coming into Terrielle without an escort of trustworthy males."

She sighed. "Shira and Ranon are going to be part of my Court, so I need to keep them safe. What could be so bad about their home territory that Ranon wouldn't want me there without a full escort? Ender, I've never gone anywhere with a full escort in my life."

Ender chewed on his lip. "Things are going awry in Kaeleer, you know that," he said. "It seems calculated, and I'm starting to wonder that it might be something coming out of Tereille, going by what Karla's told me. It's possible that whatever is doing it has some part of it in its grasp, but all I've got is guesswork. There are a lot of bad things that can happen when countries get isolated the way Tereille has become."

She nodded. "I know, I just didn't realize that things were getting so bad outside of Kaeleer. I thought that what happened at Agio was just a rare occurrence, but with the way Ranon was acting, I'm beginning to wonder if things are worse than I imagined. I feel like I've been naive about things outside of my own village and it bothers me."

[[OOC: Off to a meeting for the next two hours!]]

"It's not so bad, having grown up without knowing too much about pain and death," Ender said, with a little smile. "There are a lot of worse things in the world, actually. You didn't know, and only now we're beginning to figure this all out. Just keep your eyes open now, now that you know."

He leaned on the desk. "Did he say anything specific?"

Cassidy nodded.

"You're right. I know now and I plan to do my best to get as much information as possible." She smiled at his use of the we're and appreciated that -- even though she knew he was involved in the knowledge because of his friendship with Karla. She still appreciated knowing there was other help.

"He wouldn't give me any details," she grumbled. "Just said that he wasn't going to let me end up dead or worse and that I wasn't allowed to do much traveling without an escort."

The 'we'... was also fully on purpose. Maybe partly subconsciously, but Ender still tried to bring groups closer together if it seemed like they'd all be better off for it.

"It seems like it's mostly witches getting threatened," he said. "You're a Queen - that's also got to be part of it."

Cassidy thought for a moment and then nodded slowly. "I think you may be right, Ender. I told Ranon that I could disguise myself to go visit their home safely and he told me that anyone who knew how to sense it would know that I was a Queen no matter how I looked."

"The downside of psychic scent," Ender said, sympathetically. "I think he made the right decision in this case. If anything, at least that means you could concievably get some intelligence on what's going on, if Ranon ever cracks, without threat to yourself. Don't run the risk of getting captured unless it's worthwhile."

"I thought about asking if a Black Widow could find a way to disguise my psychic scent, but then figured that neither Shira or Karla would be happy if I thought about that idea." She rested her chin on her hand. "Yes, I've been trying to do as much research as I can. I considered asking Morton or Aaron to help me gather information. However, I'm almost positive that if Karla's version of my cousin found out I was looking into things in Terrielle he would have three kinds of a fit."

"He's concerned about your wellfare," Ender pointed out. "Doesn't mean you need to let him do the thinking for you. Also doesn't mean you should risk your neck when you don't need to."

She nodded. "I know. I have to stay safe so I can look after my people and do what needs to be done, but it's also my responsibility to become fully aware of what might be going on." She tilted her head thoughtfully. "It's a puzzle, but I've learned enough here to know that all puzzles can be solved in some fashion as long as you think to ask for assistance."

"If you can get it," Ender said. He glanced at the door, then back at Cassidy. "You're not as used to the vagaries of being a Queen as Karla is, are you?"

He wasn't passing judgement. He was interested.

Cassidy shook her head. "No, not at all. Until I came here and met Karla I had been of the belief that I would be an unimportant Queen because I'm not a powerful witch. I was content to be the best Queen I thought my power would allow me to be. I'm not going to rule a Territory like Karla has always known she would. Between being friends with Karla and Shira, and meeting Ranon, I'm learning that a great deal of my thoughts and ideas aren't correct. I thought that because of my lighter Jewel I wouldn't be in any kind of danger because I wouldn't be a threat to someone more powerful."

She gave Ender a small smile. "I'm learning that this was incorrect. Then again, I wasn't ever expecting to have a tie to a Warlord Prince, either."

"The world can be surprising that way," Ender said. And he would know, though he'd always known he was either going to be important or be pushed into the dirt, depending. "You don't have to have great physical or magical power to make a difference - a lot of wars are actually won on words and charm, instead."

"I have a lot of words," she said sheepishly. "Especially when I'm passionate about something. It's the charm part that I'm not really good at. I'm trying to learn to be better with that."

When he pings in.

I am so tired and want a nap.
