How to Be a Really Famous Actor (And Other Acting Tips), Friday, Period 1

"Now you listen close and you listen hard, bucko," Lucas said, holding up the receiver of an old-school phone. "The next click you hear is me hanging up. The one after that... is me pulling the trigger!" And with that, Lucas hung up.

"That's kind of my 'Feeling lucky punk' quote from one of my biggest hits, 'You Just Don't Exist,'" Lucas said. "When people dress like Cole Hazard at conventions, that's the line they quote. That's the power of a catchphrase. You think Schwartzenegger gets to be a politician today if he couldn't mumble at least one good catchphrase per movie? If you do, you're an idiot and the rest of the class should kick your ass and steal your lunch money."

Lucas waited to see if anyone would raise their hand and volunteer for an ass kicking.

"It's Friday. We're in Hawaii on Sunday. You don't want to do any work now, I get that," Lucas said. "Unfortunately for you guys, 'evil' is in my job description. So you're going to get a bunch of situations and you need to come up with catchphrases for them. Your character is a badass. They're about to do something badass. Figure out what you're going to say and then make it sound badass."

"I do not," Kate said, almost certain she didn't, despite how much time she'd spent with people who definitely were a bit creepy. That couldn't rub off on her, could it? "I'm totally wholesome."

That was probably taking it too far.

Yeah, Nathan wasn't even gonna respond to that one. He just lifted an eyebrow, looking completely amused at her thinking she was wholesome.

"I... could be," she amended under that look. "Whatever. I'm not creepy."

"Yeah, if you're wholesome, I'm fucking angelic," he said and rolled his eyes. "Try again, Kate. Don't pretend to be something you're not. It's a lot less fun."

"Says you," Kate muttered, pushing an errant strand of hair back behind her ear. then she brushed that whole thing aside. "So, did you have big plans for the holiday, apart from not being neither wholesome nor creepy?"

And he hadn't even meant to allude to her shitty (to him) relationship.

Nathan shrugged. "Drink a lot, I guess. Maybe catch some fun but I'm Irish so I'll probably end up a fucking tomato if I stay out there too long. Check out the local scenery. Take in art museum. Bother Caroline since I'm sure she'll absolutely miss me."

"Mm, of course," Kate replied, a bit dryly. Couldn't help it. "Well, I hope you have fun, and will make fun of you if you burn your delicate Irish skin."

"Aw, you sound like this is the last I'm gonna see of you," Nathan said, frowning at her. "I wanna bother you too, you know. I just thought that went without saying and didn't want to further inflate your gigantic ego while we're already dealing with Professor Ego over there."

Kate gave him a look like she was impervious to his frowning. She wasn't.

"And what about your wildly oversized ego, hmm?" she wondered mildly. "And who says I'll let you bother me?"

"Oh, look who's talking," he accused, making a face at her. "Your ego and my ego are obviously married which means we're destined to be friends, Kate. Destined. And you want me to bother you because I can find the fun and finding the fun alone isn't as fun as finding it with a friend. Plus, we'll have alibis."

"Our egos are married?" She could not help neither repeating that, nor the little amused smirk. "How romantic. And you sound like you've thought this through."

"I've thought it through...just now," he said and put a hand to his heart. "Kate, does your ego wanna marry mine?"

Kate laughed. "Yeah, sure. It's not like it's ever met as equal a match before."

"Great," he said, clapping his hands and hoping that served...as apology enough about their little fight that neither would bring it up because he really didn't want to explain and he was sure she didn't either.

"So, now that we're forever connected, I guess that means it's imperative that I bother in Hawaii," he said, nodding. "See how well this works out?"

It was as good an apology as Kate could have hoped for, really, for something she was largely ignoring because that was... just a mess they didn't need to get into again, preferably ever.

"Does seem mighty logical," she agreed. "So I guess I'll let you. I can even pretend to be bothered by you."

Because she really wasn't.

"I knew I loaned my shirt to you for a reason," Nathan said, sighing dramatically and even adding in a little mini swoon. "If I were the marrying type, I'd be asking you right now but that's never gonna happen so let's pretend I didn't even bring it up."

"I heard nothing," Kate drawled, amused. "Well, I heard nothing until some opportune moment where I can annoy you by bringing that up."

"And if you decide to do that, I'll start using that nickname you hate so much," Nathan warned, smirking. "The one my dear roommate gave to you so long ago after you both turned down the idea of a lesbian Jello fight."

"What do you mean, start?" Kate asked, making a face. "I mean, you already use it like three times every time we talk."

"I haven't yet today!" Nathan pointed out like that was an accomplishment. "And I usually stop after you tell me to stop! Usually!"

No, he usually poked harder. That was just his way.

"I'm sorry, did you suddenly forget who you're talking to?" she wondered, raising her brows. "Are you confusing me with someone who doesn't pay as much attention to you when you talk? You rarely stop when I tell you to."

Nathan shrugged, unaffected by being caught in his lie. "And if you'd had that big a problem with it, I think you would have punched me in the nose by now. I think you liiiiike when I pay attention to you, no matter what it is. It makes you feel important."

"As if your attention makes me feel important," Kate scoffed. About half faking it. "I'm not that pathetic, thank you."

Not always, anyway.

"You don't have to be pathetic to enjoy my attention," Nathan said, making a face. "Don't hurt my feelings, Kate. They're fucking delicate lately."

"Didn't say anything about not enjoying your attention," she pointed out easily. "Just that it doesn't have a part in how important I feel. I'm not trying to stomp on your feeeeelings."

It probably wasn't necessary to draw that last word out but she did it for fun.
