"Now you listen close and you listen hard, bucko," Lucas said, holding up the receiver of an old-school phone. "The next click you hear is me hanging up. The one after that... is me pulling the trigger!" And with that, Lucas hung up.

"That's kind of my 'Feeling lucky punk' quote from one of my biggest hits, 'You Just Don't Exist,'" Lucas said. "When people dress like Cole Hazard at conventions, that's the line they quote. That's the power of a catchphrase. You think Schwartzenegger gets to be a politician today if he couldn't mumble at least one good catchphrase per movie? If you do, you're an idiot and the rest of the class should kick your ass and steal your lunch money."

Lucas waited to see if anyone would raise their hand and volunteer for an ass kicking.

"It's Friday. We're in Hawaii on Sunday. You don't want to do any work now, I get that," Lucas said. "Unfortunately for you guys, 'evil' is in my job description. So you're going to get a bunch of situations and you need to come up with catchphrases for them. Your character is a badass. They're about to do something badass. Figure out what you're going to say and then make it sound badass."

Nathan chuckled and shrugged again. "There has to be a reason?"

Nathan was actually Kate couldn't see that he hadn't wanted to get into more feelings talk so he'd gone with a little joke courtesy of her tits.

Except that... "Yeah, you trying to create a diversion from something you don't wanna talk about." She shrugged. "But, suit yourself."

Nathan wasn't going to confirm or deny that. He shrugged a shoulder instead. "I hope Hawaii has chicken nuggets. I wouldn't want to go to a far off tropical land and miss my favorite food. Americans have junk food on islands, right? Don't break my heart here, Kate."

Yeah, that still read as hardcore avoidance to Kate, but she had mercy. She didn't want to start a fight today any more than he did.

"I'm sure they have chicken nuggets in Hawaii too, Nathan," she assured him, rolling her eyes. "It's not all exotic fruits and stuff."

She wouldn't have even gotten a fight out of him. He would've just ignored the whole thing by either ignoring her or getting up and leaving. No talking about his feelings right now.

"Good because while I am a growing boy, I don't want to put mangoes and shit in my body," he said, patting his stomach and grinning. "Who knows how that exotic shit might interact with me? I've got a very balanced thing going on here. Junk food, alcohol, and cigarette smoke. One small bump and I might just ruin it all and end up with a chubby pouch like a kangaroo."

"Yeah, I can see how that combo totally has a delicate balance," Kate drawled in a way that suggested no. "And it must not be fucked up with weird crap like fresh fruit. But what about exotic fruity drinks?"

"It remains to be seen if I can ingest those without interrupting the delicate balance of my finely tuned body," he said after a moment. "I guess that's a question in which the answer will be unknown until I try. Oooh, suspense!"

"Oooh indeed," Kate smirked. "That's clearly a task for the holiday. Last year in the Bahamas, I made very good friends with this half frozen neon green rum drink. I'm hoping to find something similar now."

Which was about the scope of parallels she was willing to draw between the two holidays. Last year's was... more than a little painful to think about now, and not just because of all the stuff that had gone down right before it.

"Rum's not really my favorite," he said, shaking his head. "I prefer whiskey, actually. Rum just makes me feel like a fucking pirate or something and then I get sad when I don't actually have a ship or a parrot or a peg leg or an eyepatch."

"Being a pirate is really all about hoisting sails and singing sea shanties and tanning, anyway," Kate replied dismissively. "Trust me, I've taken classes."

"You've taken pirate classes?" Nathan asked, giving her a look. "And why is that? I don't really picture you as a pirate, Kate. Not even a very, very feminine pirate. I picture you as more of the...damsel in distress who has to walk the plank when she gets too shrill."

"Screw you," she said, wrinkling her nose, displeased. "They were easy classes -- Well, the first one was easy, but the second one had all the hoisting and made my arms hurt."

"Didn't you already do that?" Nathan asked because he absolutely couldn't help himself.

Kate rolled her eyes. She'd left that one right open, hadn't she? "Yes but I think the meaning's a bit different in this case."

"The meaning's only different if we say so and I refuse to say it's different," Nathan said, deciding that making sense was for losers. "I choose to thing of it as actual screwing. It's a happier thing."

"Well, my intentions were still hurtful," Kate decided. "And you refusing anything doesn't change that, so there."

"I'm not hurt," Nathan said, shrugging a shoulder. "Takes a big, long, sharp and deep knife to do damage to me. I am impenetrable."

"Intentions, not the end result," Kate reminded him, though she did think he was full of shit on that particular point. She glanced idly towards the front of the room. "Think we should actually be doing something?"

"Yeah, probably," he said, shrugging. "Wouldn't want him to throw me out a window for goofing off. It might hurt a little and I wouldn't want to break my beautiful face before a big trip."

"It would hurt a lot, and you'd break a lot more than your pretty face," Kate replied, then sighed, already leaning back in her chair to go back to doing something more class-related. "Guess we should make an attempt at being good students."

Nathan just smirked, using his returned shirt as a cushion to prop himself up while he paid attention to the lecture.
