Myths and Legends of the Deep {Thursday, Period 2}

"Hey guys, sorry about handwavily canceling class last week. Something came up mun completely forgot, oops! but it's been taken care of," Summer explained. "Today, we're going to touch upon seas monsters of the deep. The ones we'll discuss today are thought to be complete myths but there's a good possibility versions of these monsters might exist in a different world somewhere." If there was one thing Summer had learned from Fandom, it was that anything was possible.

"For centuries, people have claimed to see creatures in Loch Ness in Scotland. The earliest sighting is noted to being in the 7th century. The phenomena did not take hold of people's imaginations until 1933 when a man claimed to see the monster cross the road in front of his car. There were a few other reports in that year of seeing the monster on land before it reentered the water. In 1934, a photo of the monster’s head and neck was released as proof of Nessie’s existence. However, the picture was revealed as a hoax in 1994.

Many reports fit the description of the now extinct plesiosaur. Other people have said Nessie might be an eel, large invertebrate, some type of mammoth newt, or Kelpie. A Kelpie is a monstrous, mystic sea creature. In Celtic legends the Kelpie, when hungry, would come out of the lake and shape-shift into the form of a horse. The Kelpie always had a dripping mane and cold, clammy skin.

There have been many reports, many hoaxes, and even a society that moved to get Nessie ordained as a real animal. The society was known as Loch Ness Phenomena Investigation Bureau (LNPIB.) It was dissolved in 1972, ten years after starting in 1962. It had over 1,000 members. Could Nessie actually exist or was it a hoax all along?" Summer paused, wondering about that herself. After all, most legends had some semblance of truth, didn't they?

"The Kraken, an octopus-like monster of colossal proportions, was a product of Norse mythology. The Kraken had a hundred arms, some topped by serpentine heads. When the monster sighted a ship, it would excrete a black liquid that poisoned the sea. Then the Kraken would grab on to the doomed ship, dragging it down into the depths. Scientists now think that the giant squid, the largest living invertebrate, inspired the Kraken myths. It's entirely possible, seeing as the giant squid is found in deep waters, far from land." There was something about giant squids that Summer found fascinating.

"The Hydra is a many-headed serpent creature of Greek myths. Whenever a Hydra head was cut off, two more would grow back in its place. One of the heads was immortal, and could not be killed by conventional means. To further complicate matters, the Hydra's blood was poisonous, burning and chewing through whatever it touched. The Hydra was killed by the Greek hero Hercules, who cut off the Hydra's heads, burning the stumps with a torch. The immortal head was cut off and buried, where it sleeps to this day," Summer stated. "Or so the story goes. It might differ a bit, depending on whose account you read." Give or take a few facts, of course.

"So, do you believe these sea monsters exist? Is there any truth to these myths?" Summer liked to think so.

Luke couldn't help but look a little amused over the fact that he and Percy had skipped class only to have it be canceled. Clearly it was a sign or something.

The amusement didn't last long though. Soon he was zoning out. Actually, he was asleep, but his head was propped up on his hand so he was sitting up. Impressive how he could maintain his balance and sleep at the same time.

He'd probably smack his face against the desk once the bell rang.

Percy knew all about sea monsters so he only half listened. The other half of his focus was going elsewhere. Most of his time was spent flinging little pieces of paper in Luke's direction since he was asleep.

At some point mid-lecture Luke became coherent enough to realize that he was covered in little bits of paper. It really didn't take him long to figure out who was responsible.

So he rolled up a piece of paper into a ball and launched it at Percy's head.

Percy hadn't expected Luke to wake up before the class ended so he had no time at all to dodge that. It was just a piece of paper though so it bounced harmlessly off his head.

Percy laughed and looked over at the now awake Luke. "I was just decorating your desk."

"You're a friggen brat," Luke said, brushing off the pieces of paper off himself. "I'd smack you if I felt like reaching over."

"Oh, like you wouldn't do something similar if I'd been the one asleep," Percy said, rolling his eyes. "I thought you'd enjoy the fact that I took some initiative."

Blah blah blah, annoying sea monsters for Percy to kill. Nico couldn't make himself feign impressed today, but he was looking around the room a bit. No reason. Really.

Okay, so he'd made good on a bet and had gotten some fresh, yet extremely fitted clothing just for today and he wanted to see if it was working out for him beyond the all-black look.

Jason had come to class with every intention of paying attention, and maybe even taking notes. That, of course, had been before he'd laid eyes on Nico. He'd never thought that Nico would dress like that again, let alone do it in class where everyone could see him. Jason was trying not to stare, but he couldn't help it.

So it was working. Nico was pleased, but he couldn't have Jason thinking he cared. Nico smirked and took out a pen to pretend to take notes with. Which meant he was chewing on a pen cap while drawing silly mythological stick figures with swords sticking out of them as they bled black ink all over the page.

Yeah, because watching Nico with something in his mouth was totally going to make Jason stop staring. Jason scooted closer, both to check Nico out, and to see what he was wearing better.

Way to distract Nico from his art, Jay. He turned his head to see what Jason was doing and smirked before leaning over to whisper, "Shouldn't you be paying attention?"

Leda had already made the decision to never step foot in a boat. But after hearing about the Kraken, her determination was tripled.

Also the Loch Ness Monster wigged her. It can go on land?!

"They exist," Percy said definitively. "I've seen some of them before. They definitely exist. Maybe not the ones described here, I've never seen those, but I've seen sea monsters."

"Which ones have you seen?" George asked. "Maybe it's them and other people just describe them wrong."

"I've seen something called a Scylla and something called a Charybadis. They were guarding something important," he shared, shrugging. "We had to get by them. Not all that easy."
