The Science of Sexuality, Monday

Once again there were no images on the board for today’s lecture. You could thank John for that one, kids. The poor man could simply not handle Sherlock’s blase attitude toward the subject matter.

“Today we will be discussing pornography,” Sherlock replied, shooting John a look before rolling his eyes and continuing on. “If this offends your delicate sensibilities, save us all a lot of trouble and leave now before we begin.”

He gave it all of five seconds before barreling on ahead.

“I’m under no illusions that the majority of you have been unexposed to pornography in one shape or another. Be it from magazines, the Internet, videos, television or text based. While many studies claim this is a detriment to you all, they tend to be tainted by the personal beliefs of those conducting them, which leaves us with very little evidence to prove that point,” Sherlock continued. “The fact is that, while sexual predators do tend to own pornography, the vast majority of those who do as well are not sexual predators. Just the same as gun owners not all being violent criminals simply because they own guns.”

“Some are merely trying to keep their friends out of trouble, for example.” John was absolutely fine with this as long as he didn’t have to give the actual lecture, thank you.

“We are discussing this because open, honest discussion of the matter forces it to become less taboo and lose the religious or sociological guilt that comes along with viewing or reading pornography. To ignore sexuality--” Ha, Sherlock. “--in a healthy individual and preach only to abstain from any activity is to doom them to no knowledge about how to avoid pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. Divorces that come from an ‘addiction’ to pornography tend to come from the inability of the couple to discuss sexual matters until it fractures the relationship.”

“Taking us all back to the importance of communication,” John finished. “Which I realize we do a lot of in these classes, but sending you all out to find pornography is a bit outside of our educational mandate.”

See, he could talk about this without getting awkward.

Really!

“Your assignment is to discuss with a partner your view on the subject matter. Again, if you don’t think yourself capable, spare us all the annoyance and leave,” Sherlock drawled.

Nathan wasn't snickering, at least. Today, he was just grinning like a fucking loon. Really, he'd expected this class to be some recycled drivel about safe sex, intercourse and all that shit he'd learned when he was six.

So, grinning like a loon because, yes, this was his forte.

Nathan was more than happy to discuss the subject matter at hand even if a punch in the eye was potentially in the offing. He didn't want that to happen (even if he'd gotten a kiss for his pain) but he also wasn't going to censor himself.

Quinn didn't have an urge to snicker this week; her issue was that the safe, sane course of abstinence was being brushed off when the point could have been made perfectly well without bringing that up.

She was going to complain after class. And probably during class. Patience and silence were not her forte.

Quinn chewed on her pen, looking for a partner who might be at least willing to listen to her point of view.

"I don't understand why you had to trash celibacy to make your point about porn," Quinn announced, sashaying up as soon as class was over. "I don't really care about whatever gross stuff people want to look at on their own time, but some of us are religious and stuff."

Quinn bit back her first response. That's dumb was not something she'd say to a teacher.

Even one who was, in fact, being dumb.

"So watching porn will make people keep their pants on," she said skeptically. "Seriously, this is what you're telling us? I really don't think it's a responsible message."

Emma wasn't the world's hugest fan of porn. Erotic literature or photography? Sure. But the stuff that seemed to constitute porn was, well, cheapish and occasionally blush-worthy.

But she'd do her best to discuss the subject matter without trying to strangle anyone. Or mentally poke Alex to fill him in on what he was missing and see if he'd entertain her.

It was much easier to avoid snickering when the teachers themselves weren't doing it. Really, otherwise, the class tended to just be interesting, and Ariel was a little on the edge of her seat wondering if the class assignment was going to involve actually showing pornography.

But, noooo. They were just going to discuss it, instead. Funny, how that left Ariel simultaneously disappointed and relieved.

Quinn appreciated the mental image. Really.

Oh, wait, she didn't.

"I don't believe the sex maniac stuff," Quinn said, because she was pretty sure if that were true every boy she had ever met would be --

Okay, maybe there was a point to that theory, but it wasn't her argument of the moment.

"But it makes people think of sex as this casual thing, it degrades women, and I still don't think everybody who believes in abstinence is going to end up with 12 babies and stage three syphilis."

Canon, meanwhile, was laughing at her. Hard.

Emma had gotten back to the island about fifteen minutes before class was due to start, and something was...itching at the back of her brain. A lot of the little 'placeholder' telepathic tabs she tended to place on her people were blinking bright red. And there were - things - about that should not be.

Clearly she'd missed something while spending the weekend with Hank, but it would have to wait until after class. Academics first, possibly yelling at people for doing stupid things without supervision later.

Quinn considered this, pursing her lips. "Fine. Do I get extra credit for it?"
