The Science of Sexuality, Monday

Once again there were no images on the board for today’s lecture. You could thank John for that one, kids. The poor man could simply not handle Sherlock’s blase attitude toward the subject matter.

“Today we will be discussing pornography,” Sherlock replied, shooting John a look before rolling his eyes and continuing on. “If this offends your delicate sensibilities, save us all a lot of trouble and leave now before we begin.”

He gave it all of five seconds before barreling on ahead.

“I’m under no illusions that the majority of you have been unexposed to pornography in one shape or another. Be it from magazines, the Internet, videos, television or text based. While many studies claim this is a detriment to you all, they tend to be tainted by the personal beliefs of those conducting them, which leaves us with very little evidence to prove that point,” Sherlock continued. “The fact is that, while sexual predators do tend to own pornography, the vast majority of those who do as well are not sexual predators. Just the same as gun owners not all being violent criminals simply because they own guns.”

“Some are merely trying to keep their friends out of trouble, for example.” John was absolutely fine with this as long as he didn’t have to give the actual lecture, thank you.

“We are discussing this because open, honest discussion of the matter forces it to become less taboo and lose the religious or sociological guilt that comes along with viewing or reading pornography. To ignore sexuality--” Ha, Sherlock. “--in a healthy individual and preach only to abstain from any activity is to doom them to no knowledge about how to avoid pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. Divorces that come from an ‘addiction’ to pornography tend to come from the inability of the couple to discuss sexual matters until it fractures the relationship.”

“Taking us all back to the importance of communication,” John finished. “Which I realize we do a lot of in these classes, but sending you all out to find pornography is a bit outside of our educational mandate.”

See, he could talk about this without getting awkward.

Really!

“Your assignment is to discuss with a partner your view on the subject matter. Again, if you don’t think yourself capable, spare us all the annoyance and leave,” Sherlock drawled.
