Teamwork 101 -- Period 1 [Class #5] [Monday]

They were in the classroom today and Genesis had, as was his norm, gotten there first. Let it not be said, after all, that Genesis did not keep his promises.

On the desk lay an extravagant bouquet of moth orchids, and enough truly expensive beadwork, jewels, pearls, ribbon, to quite firmly nudge the whole thing over the realm of normal and into the land of ridiculous. An embossed card simply read ‘Reno’ on it.

Genesis was smugly pleased with himself, though he did not look it, gazing out over the class with cool eyes.

Reno was giving the bouquet the most baffled stare that he could manage. Something like that had to cost more than triple what he made in a year, as a teacher or as a Turk. And Turks got paid, and paid well. Served him right for telling Genesis that he demanded flowers for a dance, last class.

“Yo, rookies?” Yeah, Reno was a smidgen distracted today. The hell, flowers. “Today, we’re gonna be makin’ you all put them powers of cooperation that we’ve been makin’ you work on to use.”

Genesis leaned back in his chair and smiled. “You’ve all been paired up,” with one group of three, “and between now and next week, you’re to go in your group to at least one business in town, and sing for whomever is working that day.” He had no such distractions to keep him from teaching, after all.

“Consider this an exercise in working together in a situation that may be considered unpleasant,” he added, “and remember that your teachers, too, will be doing it.”

At least Genesis had a fabulous voice.

And Reno hated him all the more for it. Damn you, Gackt.

“Get to it, Rookies,” he sighed, waving a hand at the group as a whole. “And if anyone wants to give me a hand with this damn thing after class, I’ll give ‘em a flower or somethin’. There ain’t no way I’m gonna be able to carry all these as far as my office, yo.”

Genesis smirked.

[Wait for the OCD is uuuup!]

"...okay, yeah, that'd be worse," Jason admitted. "I don't know if I'm a very good singer, I'm just going to warn you now."

"It's okay," Karla promised. "I've been told by Mr. Rhapsodos that I need to practice my singing anyway. We can look at this as a learning experience or...something like that.."

"Are you going to be in the musical?" Jason asked. Maybe he could sing quietly and let Karla's voice be the one that carried. "We could pick a small business. Where there won't be many people?"

"I tried out, yes," Karla said, nodding. "And I had voice training for years when I was little, not that that helps me when I'm trying to sing any of Jono's guitar songs."

Or when auditioning for Genesis, apparently.

"I was thinking...Ben works at Fixer-Uppers on Fridays. Singing in public might be balanced out by his expression while he's being serenaded? And since he's my friend, I'll probably get the bulk of the teasing." Because there would be teasing. Karla had no illusions about that. "Though if you have other ideas, that's cool, too."

"No, that sounds really good," Jason said. "I'd much rather do this in front of another student. I think Ben would be a lot more likely to understand what's happening if we say it's for class than, you know, someone who's never had to do stuff like this for a class." Some of the adults just wouldn't understand.

They were like parents that way!

"So, Fixer-Uppers, a little after lunchtime? This was we won't have to sing for Ben and Ender," she suggested.

"Sounds good to me," Jason said with a nod, glad for the smallest audience they could get. At least the first part of their assignment was set now. The harder part would definitely be whatever happened Friday.

"Idea for a song?" Karla asked. "I don't know many. Not from this world, anyway."

"I don't suppose we could get away with 'Happy Birthday'?" Jason suggested. "Or 'I'm a Little Teapot'?" He figured short might be better, considering their talents.

"I know 'Happy Birthday'?" Karla offered. 'I'm a Little Teapot' hadn't really been in heavy rotation since she arrived.

"I think that should totally count, even if it's not Ben's birthday," Jason said. "He should appreciate the experience being quick."
