Myths and Legends of the Deep {Thursday, Period 2}

Once all of her students were settled in, Summer began her lecture. A picture was displayed on the board behind her.

"The Bermuda Triangle, which is also referred to as the Devil's Triangle, is an area in the Atlantic Ocean that is known for causing numerous aircraft and sea vessels to mysteriously disappear. As you can see from the image behind me, the Bermuda Triangle covers the Straits of Florida, the Bahamas and part of Puerto Rico. According to reports, most of the mysterious disappearances seemed to happen around Florida and the Bahamas."

"In 1945 Flight 19, a training flight of bombers mysteriously went down over the area. Over 1,700 vessels have been reported missing in the Triangle. In addition, hurricanes and tropical storms occur with alarming frequency." Summer paused, letting that sink in (no pun intended!) before continuing with her lecture.

"There are those who believe that the Bermuda Triangle happens because of supernatural connections and others believe the disappearances are caused by natural occurrences," she explained, citing some examples for each explanation.

"What do you think? Many people have given reasons as to how some of the incidents in the Bermuda Triangle happened and disputed that there was any mystery to begin with. I'd like to know what you all think. Is the Bermuda Triangle something more than just a natural occurring phenomenon as some believe it to be?"

Summer wasn't sure what to believe. It was easier to go by a case to case basis, then try to figure something out that's been in existing for longer than she's been alive.

"Huh? Um, Percy can probably stick his hand in a glass of water and tell us," Nico said, his brain clinging to what words he'd heard repeated despite his lack of focus during the lecture. "But from my experience, this stuff's usually real, just not the way humans think."

"I bet it's bullshit," George said, shrugging her shoulders. "I mean, not bullshit, but ... come on. You pick any area that big and you can find mysteries around it. People make shit fit into a pattern even when it doesn't. Some of them got lost, some of them wrecked, and maybe there's something weird there that screws up compasses or whatever, but it's not some kind of death trap vortex."
