Chemistry; Tuesday, Period One [ 01/04 ]

Knowing she was on a time frame here, Kūkaku wasn’t going to waste a single minute on her introduction to her class. She kept an eye on the clock, and, once it hit nine, she started in, not caring if any of the students weren’t there yet. They shouldn’t be late, anyway, really.

So nine o’clock hit and the large breasted, scantily clad, one-armed teacher with the two giant twin servants standing like pillars behind her slapped her hand on the desk at the front of the classroom. “Chemistry,” she announced. “Yer gonna learn it, and yer learnin’ it from the best. I’m Kūkaku Shiba; these two behind me are Koganehiko and Shiroganehiko, and they’re going to be handin’ out your textbooks. Yes, textbooks. No, we’re not going to blow them up.”

Yet.

“There’s also a currently handwavey syllabus included, and they’ll include the chapters you’ll read each day for class. Ya want a class that looks good on transcripts, ya gotta do some actual class work. But don’t worry. It’s not gonna be boring, I can promise you that. I don’t do boring. So what’s chemistry? It’s the science of matter and the changes it goes through. An’ the building blocks of matter, protons and neutrons and electrons that make up atoms, are all put together to make up elements. Open up your books to the appendix and you’ll find your common Periodic Table of Elements. These elements come together and make reactions or make matter, or whatever. For example, take two parts hydrogen and one part oxygen ya get....”

She smacked a glass on the table, splashing its contents out. “Water. Equal parts sodium and chloride, ya get...”

Sprinkling something on the table. “Salt. And take phosphorus and oxygen and put them together and you get..."

Kūkaku glanced up at the clock and held out a finger. "Wait for it. ...And..."

The door to the classroom opened; she snapped her fingers and a loud explosion ignited just as Genesis walked through; the glorious, though harmless burst completely overrode whatever she said, at first.

He’d been asked to show at precisely ten after nine. Knowing Kūkaku, and having taken a glance at the course list and arched a brow at what she was teaching—innocuously titled ‘Chemistry’, but he was unfooled considering the personality behind the class—was well prepared for anything.

Which meant, come precisely ten after nine, he flung the door open and entered the room in a sweep of red leather, suitably dramatic, he thought, to amuse her. (Besides, it amused him to put on the show.)

He was… as the explosion went up practically in his face, quite amused. And, because it would irk her (he couldn’t be seen as being too nice) carelessly waved a hand in front of his face to clear the smoke. “Not,” he said very dryly, “your best work.”

Of course, she probably didn’t want to scare the children, too much… Which meant she was nicer than he’d ever been.

It certainly wasn’t going to make anyone faint this time; she was a bit softer this time around since it was a real class and all. “I blame what I had to work with. Kids, this’s Genesis, who can now tell ya first hand that when you put some elements together, they’ll go boom, right, Red?”

“Perhaps,” Genesis allowed, with a tolerantly amused glance at the class. “Unless I feel like saying otherwise.”

Because Genesis was contrary like that. Also, not the best teacher in the world.

“In other words, don’t listen to him, he’s an idiot. Anyway,” Kūkaku was going to get back to class now, figuring Genesis could stay if he wanted and she needed something else to blow up later on in the lecture, or he could leave, she didn’t really care, because she got her fun in. And if he just wanted to kick back and watch the rest of the class, she didn’t mind. At least he wasn’t Holmes. “That’s the basic introduction to chemistry and we’ll get more into it next week. This week, however, we’re gonna introduce ourselves so I can know who I’m teaching. Here’s the drill. I want your name, your interest in takin’ my class, and I want you to pick an element off the periodic table. Pick one that represents you, that you like, or just close your eyes and pick one at random for all I care, but pick one, and, if ya want, explain why.”

There was, of course, going to be a homework assignment based on that, but Kūkaku wasn’t telling them about that until they were all finished.

“Alright, let’s start with....you. Also, Bandages.” She pointed to Jono. “Come see me after class. Introductions, let’s go. Sooner we get this done, the sooner we can get out of here” She waved her hand and waited for whoever wished to commence to do so.

Oh yeah, she was sincere.

Cassidy's eyes widened. "Yearly?" Her tone was dismayed. She chewed on her bottom lip. "I'm really going to have to learn to fight and use weapons while I'm here, then. I will not be someone who will need to be rescued or protected all of the damn time." That last was said with a bit of stubborn determination.

"Good," he said bluntly. "Because the odds of there always being people around to protect you are slim-to-nonexistent."

He was so cheerful!

"You mentioned you weren't bad at throwing things," Genesis added, "and your magic--how fares that offensively?"

Colour him curious.

But Cassidy appreciated a male being honest with her and not getting all huffy about how it was his right to protect a Queen. Which she had no intention of telling more people than she already had.

"I'm pretty good at throwing things and can hit what I'm aiming for. I need to get better at hitting at the exact point on a target that I'm wanting to." She tilted her head. "Those of us with Craft can usually use blasts of power to hit things with, but until that Labyrinth thing I had never really used my powers offensively before." She sighed. "I never thought I'd need to, but I'm seeing that I have been naive about a great many things before I came here."

"Those who are constantly protected usually are," he noted, not entirely unkindly. "You should be glad you're young enough to unlearn bad habits."

Blasts of magic…

"Tell me," Genesis added, "your blasts--are the composed of elemental energy? Or pure energy?"

"My brother and my cousin would say that going away to school was teaching me too many bad habits," Cassidy said cheerfully. "They get so annoying about the things that they don't think I should be doing."

She paused to consider that question. "Pure energy and power," she finally answered. "How strong it is depends on how much base power we have in us or our stored reserves... and on how powerful we are to begin with. I'm not as powerful as others in my world, but I have been learning that it doesn't mean I can't do things that I never thought I could."

"Nonsense," he said airily. "There's no such thing as bad habits--unless it's in your fighting form."

Actually, it was more that those were the only bad habits Genesis really cared to steer people away from. In this mood.

... Don't believe him, Cassidy.

As for the rest of it... "The only limitations are that of imagination in many cases. Do you think you could manage an elemental blast?"

[identity profile] nothornlessrose.livejournal.com 2011-01-05 07:31 pm (UTC)(link)
"They've never really thought to teach me to fight. The moves I do know are because I watched my brother and used them against him a lot."

She thought about this. "I'm not sure because I've never tried to use my Craft like that. Are you talking about elemental like fire or water? Because I can create balls of witch fire, but I've never thought of trying to use them as a weapon blast before."

And now Genesis had her thinking about this.

Genesis... winced at the thought of that sort of learning. Hardly proper, really.

"Elemental fire, water, earth, wind," he elaborated. "Though ice also counts as one in my world--more common than water, truly."

"I've never even tried to get my powers to do anything like that, so I'm not sure. I can float and do things on air, but I've never heard anything or read anything in my books about being able to use the wind as a weapon."

Genesis contemplated the girl for a long moment.

That was inexcusable and just how incompetent were her teachers anyway back there?

Ugh, having to pick up the slack of other people.

"Tell me," he said, almost lightly. "Are you busy Saturday?"

Re: Talk to Genesis - Chemistry, 01/04.

[identity profile] nothornlessrose.livejournal.com 2011-01-06 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Cassidy shook her head. "No, I don't have any clubs or classes on Saturdays."

Genesis gave a short bark of a laugh at that.

Truly, who did?

"Meet me on the beach," he said carelessly. "And I'll give you some instruction in the elements."

If nothing else, she had to be smarter than Zack Angeal's puppy.

She gave him a beaming smile and nodded. "I can do that. What time would you prefer?"

Because, really? Cassidy was known to get up too early to work in the gardens and sometimes kept at it until it got dark.

Hmmm. His training, and his loafing around, hmmm.

"Eleven," he decided. "I trust that will be satisfactory?"

Re: Talk to Genesis - Chemistry, 01/04.

[identity profile] nothornlessrose.livejournal.com 2011-01-06 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
Cassidy nodded immediately. "I'll be there."

Genesis probably had no idea what he was in for. When someone offered to teach this witchling something, she worked at it all of the time.

"Good," Genesis said, with a nod. "Until then."

He'd prefer it, certainly, though it would surprise him at first.

She smiled and nodded. "Until then, sir." She gave him another grin and headed out.
