Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

In order to give people a place to get away from the traffic jam of the buffet and information tables, most of the chairs and tables had been set up further out on the lawn, away from the school building. The bonfires were going strong, and there was plenty of room for everyone to sit down and enjoy themselves. Assuming they weren't too busy still trying to figure this place out.

[OCD is up! This is the FIRST post for general mingling. Please use this post first, if your browser can handle the comment load. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here and there's more room for mingling here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

At the table next to Sov was someone who seemed to enjoy their food too. Sov shot them a shy glance.

It was Karla's third trip to the table, so she was a little more observant of non-food related items than she had been previously. She was reaching for more cookies when she noticed a new student smiling at her.

"Kiss kiss," she said, returning the smile to...her? Him? Karla wasn't sure and the psychic scent wasn't telling either.

Okay, that was disconcerting. Very disconcerting. She tried not to let her smile slip. "I'm Karla."

Sov didn't notice anything other than the strange greeting, but assumed that was just a different dialect thing.

"I'm Sov," they replied. "The food here is really good."

"The food is as good as the island itself is strange," Karla agreed. "Welcome to Fandom, Sov. Where or when are you from?"

Okay, yes. Pleasantries. She could do pleasantries without know gendering. This would be fine.

"Strange?" Sov was still able to ask that. "And I'm from the planet of Gethen. And you?"

"The Territory Glacia in Realm Kaeleer," Karla returned. "I won't take you never hearing of my world amiss if you promise the same with me never hearing of yours."

Sov shook their head. "I haven't."

"I hadn't thought you would," Karla assured him. "Kaeleer seems to exist off by itself. We don't even have other planets to travel to, as some universes do."

That sounded odd, but there were many strange things here, and Sov felt they didn't need an explanation right now. "What is your home like?"

"Very different from here," Karla said, "though I think that's true for everyone. My people have existed for hundreds of millions of years. We have Craft, which most people commonly think of as magic." Her expression grew distant and wistful for a moment. "My home Territory is a land of high mountains and deep forests and cold lochs. But there are many Territories in Kaeleer, and they're all quite lovely. There are the grassy plains of Sceval, and the jungles of Tigrelan, and mountain aeries of the Fyreborn Islands that jut out into the sea..."

Shaking off her moment of homeseickness, she tilted her head towards Sov and asked, "What of your home?"

"Gethen is going through an ice age, and has been for as long as anyone can remember," Sov replied. "But we have adapted to it. My family live in Rer, which is the most ancient city in the world... on the planet."

It was odd, having to describe the place.

"I've never been away from home before."

"Magic?"
glacial_queen: (Huh?)

"I had never left Glacia, either," Karla said sympathetically. "It can be hard to adjust, in the beginning."

At least, it had been for her. Of course, there had been some contributing factors to that as well.

"You've never heard of magic before?" Karla asked, a little taken aback. Craft was something most new students weren't familiar with, but Karla hadn't met anyone who didn't know what magic was. She was a little at a loss for a way to describe it. "Ummm...using the manipulation of, uh, energy to accomplish...things?" she tried.

And then figured a practical demonstration would be more useful. She crooked her finger at several cookies, causing them to float off the table and onto her plate. "Like that. But there's a lot more than that."
