Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

In order to give people a place to get away from the traffic jam of the buffet and information tables, most of the chairs and tables had been set up further out on the lawn, away from the school building. The bonfires were going strong, and there was plenty of room for everyone to sit down and enjoy themselves. Assuming they weren't too busy still trying to figure this place out.

"Dude, he's not gonna care all that much. He'll just tease you a bit. Which Nico deserves because he teases me about Percy all the time," Luke said. "Now if you get mad and insult him back then, yeah, he'll probably try to drown you."

"Yeah, and I'm trying to avoid drowning this year. It's one of my New Year's resolutions," Jason said. "I'll keep that in mind though. And I'm sorry for teasing you about you and Percy in the past. He must have some redeeming qualities if you like him so much."

"Percy's an obnoxious brat with a terrible temper," Luke said, shaking his head. "It's nuts, but that's what I like most about him."

Jason laughed, and shook his head. "You have strange taste then." Said the boy screwing a son of Hades.

"Yeah, like you have room to talk," Luke said, rolling his eyes.

"Nico's not obnoxious. He just, you know, asks a lot of questions. Rapidly. In a row." It could be kind of endearing sometimes, at least.

"Yeah, I've noticed that little habit of his." It proved to be a bit of a problem now. "At least he keeps his mouth shut if you answer his questions. And you can pretty much tell him anything and he won't get mad. That's nice."

"And he's good at keeping secrets," Jason said. "And yeah, like, nothing I tell him about home fazes him. That is really awesome."

"Well being from the Underworld, I think he's seen weirder stuff than all of us," Luke said. "Being so far from the future probably means he's seen a lot of big stuff too. Children of the Big Three are destined to do huge things."

"You think he's destined for something huge?" Jason asked. On one hand, Nico deserved to have something hugely good happen to him. But on the other, if it was something he'd have to do himself, Jason wasn't sure what Nico might do.

"It's just what tends to happen when you're the child of Zeus, Hades or Poseidon," Luke explained. "They get attacked by monsters the most but they're also the most powerful. If something big goes down you can pretty much guarantee that a child of the Big Three will play a big part in it."

Luke looked over at Jason. "Don't let that worry you. It's what we're supposed to do. What we train for, I mean. We're supposed to be heroes."

"I'm not worried," Jason lied. He didn't want to look weird or anything. "I know you guys are all strong. And I know I've only seen a little of what Nico's probably capable of. You too."

"My powers aren't all that great. They're mostly based on lying and stealing," Luke said with a shrug. "But you're right about Nico. He and Percy have a ton of powers. I used to know a daughter of Zeus--she could do some crazy stuff."

"Hey, don't sell yourself short. I think having any powers makes you great," Jason said. "The daughter of Zeus, is she back at your camp?" He did catch that "used" to know part.

"Uh in a sense, I guess," Luke said, not looking too bothered since Jason didn't know not to ask. "The girl, Thalia, was a friend of mine. We lived on the streets together for a while. We were on our way to Camp Half Blood when we were attacked by monsters and she died saving me and our friend Annabeth."

"She's not technically dead," he continued. "Zeus turned her into a tree before she could actually die. So the tree's there at the edge of camp and it helps protect it from attacks."

"She's a tree?" Jason asked, looking kind of horrified, because damn, what was with these gods? "I thought Hades was bad, but...I'm putting in a vote right now that Nico never get turned into a plant, no matter how hurt he might be."

"I'm told that Zeus turning Thalia into a tree means he cared," Luke said, not bothering to hide how he bitter he was about that. "I guess it's good that he paid attention to her for even a little bit. Most of the time they don't care if we're dead or alive. From what I've heard about Nico's relationship with Hades he's actually one of the more attentive parents."

Which was just really, really sad.

Jason thought it was incredibly sad too, and considering what his parents had been like, that was saying something. "If Hades is one of the best parents, then I feel really fucking bad for the rest of you." He might have still been a little bitter on Nico's behalf.

"Yeah, I feel bad for us too," Luke said quietly. "Percy's okay with it for some reason. When I talk about how unfair it is he gets pissed, so we just don't talk about it."

"I'm going to take a guess and say he's never had to live on the streets," Jason said. People who never had to do that just didn't understand people who had.

"No, he didn't," Luke confirmed. "His mom's actually really, really great. He talks about her all the time."

Luke was so jealous.

Jason might have gotten a little glarey too. "I'm sorry things suck for you guys. Does it as least suck less here than at camp?"

"For me it does, definitely. My experience of camp is a little different that Percy and Nico's though. They have a lot more freedom there than I do," Luke said. "And I know they don't like being cut off from the gods but I, personally, love it."
