Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

In order to give people a place to get away from the traffic jam of the buffet and information tables, most of the chairs and tables had been set up further out on the lawn, away from the school building. The bonfires were going strong, and there was plenty of room for everyone to sit down and enjoy themselves. Assuming they weren't too busy still trying to figure this place out.

"...Tony Stark," Tony replied, staring at the plate. "How are you--?"

Words have failed him just like science was at this very moment.

"I'm well, thank you," Karla said, then realized what he meant. "Oh, the plate. That's Craft. I'm a witch. From a different world, in fact. Has anyone told you about that? How there are many different world and times all meeting up here?"

"Uh, Ender explained it and mentioned stopping by the library if I was curious about the physics of it." Tony, it was rude to stare. "But how does it work?" he asked, peering under the plate. Any thought of her being female or attractive flitted right out of his mind as there was a breach in gravity to be quantified.

"Oh, you've met Ender?" Karla asked, delighted. "He's one of my best friends and taught me about the speed of light and Relative Theory and whatnot."

And she'd understood it. That was the best part!

"I'm keeping it aloft with Craft," Karla 'explained.' "Magic. My Sapphire--" she pulled out a pendent with a teardrop-shaped Jewel about half the size of her thumb, "--stores energy I can manipulate. Ender can probably explain to you how Craft works better than I can. Rather, he can explain it to you in terms that you'd understand. Different frames of reference."

"Whatnot," Tony repeated, but it was mostly out of distraction. "Do you need anything to manipulate it?"

Karla shook her head. "Training," she said. "The ability to wield Craft and wear my Jewel is innate in me, as it is with all of my people. We learn how basic Craft in our childhood. It's just...psychic manipulation of energy to make it do as I wish. And I don't let pesky rules and laws stop me, which I think bothers my sciencey friends to no end."

She felt bad about flouting the laws of the universe. Really.

"It must follow some rules, though," Tony replied. "Otherwise it wouldn't work."

"Some," Karla agreed. "But my world's rules aren't this one's, though there is some overlap. Other people say that it is a science, since it follows specific rules. It's just a science that allows me to do impossible things."

"Improbable, not impossible," Tony insisted. "I could probably design a machine to do this too, but it wouldn't be the same as yours.

Karla shrugged a bit. "Improbable works for me," she said easily. "After all, in my world, most of the things I do are fairly ordinary, so I'm don't really worry about it much."

"...why not? What happens when it doesn't work anymore and you can't figure out what went wrong?"

"I'm not really all that concerned about the difference between 'impossible' and 'improbable,' from one world to another," Karla explained. "I'm tempted to say that if Craft hasn't failed in the hundreds of millions of years the Blood have been in extistence, then it's hardly likely to, but I know better than that."

"Then it's better to know before it happens."

"I am fairly cognizant on how my Craft works," Karla said, trying not to smile too broadly. "I promise."

You know, with just a few glaring blindspots like where Jewels come from and things like that. La.

Bah, logic.

"Right." Tony shook his head. "Have you gone to school here for long?"

"Since last May," Karla said, with a nod. "It was probably just as much a shock to me as it is--or will be--to you. I don't think anyone's ready for Fandom, no matter where they come from. I'm a sophomore this year. You?"

"I'm a sophomore too," Tony said quickly. "People seem to know some other version of me, so it's been a crash course so far."

Karla snapped her fingers. "Stark!" she said, sounding relieved. "It was nagging at me, I admit. But he used to have a shop in town. Ender used to work there. Well, he still does, but it isn't Stark's anymore."

She gave him a sympathetic smile. "At least you don't have a doppelganger? I feel like it would be more annoying to have an unexpected twin than to have people know a different version."
