Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

In order to give people a place to get away from the traffic jam of the buffet and information tables, most of the chairs and tables had been set up further out on the lawn, away from the school building. The bonfires were going strong, and there was plenty of room for everyone to sit down and enjoy themselves. Assuming they weren't too busy still trying to figure this place out.

[OCD is up! This is the FIRST post for general mingling. Please use this post first, if your browser can handle the comment load. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here and there's more room for mingling here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Scully spotted a familiar face, and smiled in surprised pleasure. "Wesley. It's good to see you. I didn't expect to see you back."

"Oh!" Wesley said, hurriedly finishing the last bite of his sandwich. "Hello. It's quite nice to see you as well! How have you been?"

Amused at the awkward, Scully reached for the bowl of chips and took some for herself. "Good. I didn't get caught up in the maze-thing that happened last month, with the goblins. And I had an enjoyable break in San Diego. Where did you get to?"

Ah. The maze-thing. He'd been hearing quite a bit about it, and he had to admit that he was a little bit glad to have missed it.

"Oh, San Diego, really?" he asked, intrigued. "I was in Los Angeles. I took some time to be a rogue demon hunter."

Smug? Pompous? A little of both, actually, thanks for asking.

"My oldest brother is stationed there at the moment. And how do you -- 'take time' to be a rogue demon hunter?" Scully asked, willing to suspend enough disbelief out of curiosity to overlook the pompous. Even if she stuffed a chip in her mouth to hide her amusement.

"Well," he said, adjusting his collar in a gesture that he believed was classy and dignified. (It was not.) "I thought I could use some field expertise, given that I'll probably be working there after graduation."

Classy, this guy.

"Mmm-hmmm," Scully agreed around a mouthful of taco chip, eyes sparkling. "And so you found a... rogue demon hunter to apprentice with? Or something?"

"Actually, no," Wesley replied smoothly. "I was flying solo, thank you very much."

Unnecessary pride in that fact? Check.

"So what did you hunt?" Scully asked, having the feeling that Mulder and Wesley's abilities to obfuscate ("and then I got arrested by the guards at Area 51") might be an amusing competition.

Ah. He had these stats down, both real and exaggerated, and he was going to go with the exaggerated ones for this conversation, because they were a damn sight more impressive.

"Approximately six vampires, three demons, and a coven of witches," he said proudly. In total, that was five more than the number of things he'd actually hunted, but shh.

I can imagine the vampire hunts," Scully said thoughtfully, still chewing and watching him. "But not the demon hunts and the coven hunts. How does that work?"

"Well, demon hunts are often rather similar to vampire hunts," Wesley explained, polishing his glasses on his shirt for dramatic effect. "One goes to a secluded location, often a cemetary or a dilapidated neighborhood, and patrols, usually at night. The required tools vary depending on the type of demon, of course, but most respond rather favorably to decapitation or extreme blood loss."

So wise, this kid.

"Coven hunts are trickier," he continued. And because he'd made that up and hadn't really done it, he had no idea what the proper way to do it was. "One traditionally follows a pattern," he guessed. "A series of deaths with a common factor, for example. That suggests the presence of a spell, often cast by a witch with a vengeance."

Scully didn't quite believe all this. Although hopefully she didn't look as disbelieving as her icon.

"What did you decapitate?" she asked, grimacing.

"Several vampires and a Carnyss demon," Wesley gloated, completely oblivious to Scully's obvious disbelief.

Yes, he was even proud of his fictional accomplishments.

"To attract... more demons," Scully said, deadpan. She paused. "Well, that's better than a goat, which is what I was imagining."
