Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

In order to give people a place to get away from the traffic jam of the buffet and information tables, most of the chairs and tables had been set up further out on the lawn, away from the school building. The bonfires were going strong, and there was plenty of room for everyone to sit down and enjoy themselves. Assuming they weren't too busy still trying to figure this place out.

"Yeah, I hate to disappoint you but that's the first time I heard that," Jake snorted at just how casually she'd said that. "We've got telepaths, but I don't know if they're vegans."

"Seriously?" Ramona frowned. "Yeah, that's how you get those kinds of powers at home, you know? And sometimes things just show up when you need them, but that's not really a power so much as just how things go." She shrugged. "My normal is probably weird to you guys, from what I'm gathering."

"I'm guessing it is," he agreed instantly. "The things showing up sounds handy, though. Does it work with food too?"

Four weeks as a stuffed animal, he was allowed to be one track minded.

"I've never seen it happen with food," Ramona replied thoughtfully. "Usually weapons. And sometimes if you do really well in a fight, you get an extra life."

Because that was completely normal. Totally, totally normal.

Yeah, give him a moment to stare at her.

"Okay, that's not fair," Jake decided. "I'm supposed to be breaking your brain, not the other way around. How can you get an extra life?"

"I think you have to defeat your enemy in a time limit, or something," Ramona said, frowning in thought. "I've never had it happen to me, just heard about it. But sometimes you get bonuses during fights and stuff, too, and that helps you get closer to a life, too. But you have to be really good to get a second chance, is the thing."

"Right," he said slowly, possibly a little weirded out there. That and he thought it was unfair he'd never got a bonus for a fight. "Do you do a whole lot of fighting?"

"No, but things come up, you know?" Not for most people, Ramona. Not for most people.

"Sort of," he wasn't exactly sure if it compared to what he had in mind. "They do here, at least. We've had our share of invasions, so you won't get bored."

"Invasions?" Oh, look, now she was expressing some mild alarm. "Like...what kind of invasions?"

"The worst one I've seen was when this mad scientist decided to come take over the island," Jake explained. "He'd made these weird monkey-horse type things and there were dinosaurs attacking people. Then there were the gremlins, these small things with sharp teeth and claws. They weren't too hard to kill, there were just too many of them."

"I feel better now," he teased, but shook his head. "It gets hairy, but a lot of kids around here know how to fight. We haven't lost a fight yet, and it's happened twice now since I've been here."

At least he wasn't bringing up Silent Hill. The place still freaked him out, and she didn't need to hear that on her first day. "Most of the time it's just random stuff. Like it will rain caramel or you end up bursting into song."

"Yeah, food is something you'll never be short of here," he motioned towards the tables. "I think the school's worried parents are going to think they're starving us or something."
