Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

In order to give people a place to get away from the traffic jam of the buffet and information tables, most of the chairs and tables had been set up further out on the lawn, away from the school building. The bonfires were going strong, and there was plenty of room for everyone to sit down and enjoy themselves. Assuming they weren't too busy still trying to figure this place out.

"Really? What kinds of stuff? Is that why you came here?" he shrugged. "I heard there are vampires here. You're supposed to watch out for them, but I think maybe just talking would be okay."

Jake did such a good job scaring Bobby, really.

"Yeah, talking's safe," Caroline agreed. Screw you, Alaric. "Besides, there are good kinds and bad. Just like with all people. I left because there were kind of a lot of the bad kind around and my mom thought I'd be safer here."

"That's what I thought," Bobby agreed, pleased she agreed with him. "I mean if anyone tells you that everyone of a certain type is bad, it's probably not a good idea to listen. They're just bigots."

"And it would be wrong to be bigoted," Caroline said, totally thinking about herself here. "So what kinds of things do you do here, Bobby?"

"Um, well, I study," he said, wincing at how dorky that sounded. "And people hang out in the Common Rooms a lot. And Jack & I go running. There's a really great telescope too if you like that kind of stuff. And they have parties a lot."

"They? Jack doesn't take you to the parties?" Caroline asked.

"Oh." Bobby frowned a little. "Well, I mean, no. Mom used to make him at home sometimes, but I mean, you wouldn't wanna bring your little brother around to places, right? Jack's friends were all way cooler."

"Please, you can make your own cool," Caroline told him. "You knew to say hi to me, right? I think that shows good taste. And now I expect to see you at a party."

"Um," Bobby ducked his head, looking pleased and embarrassed. He knew just enough not to say that he was trying to say hi to all the new kids. "If I know when one is, okay."

"I bet I could manage to tell you," she replied. "It's not like the dorms are big, right?"

"They're pretty big," he admitted. "But they're easy to find their way around. I'm in 220."

"Oh wow, I don't know that I even remember mine, though I bet I'll be able to hear the girls screaming and running from my roommate from any floor," she replied, digging in her pocket for the paper. "Oh, right, four-thirteen."

"He," Caroline corrected. "More like he's completely girl crazy, foreign, and touched in the head. I don't recommend engaging Nathan in conversation."

"Oooh, I'm sorry you got stuck with him," Bobby said. "I had a girl roommate when I first got here, but my mom made me change."

"Oh wow, that'd be sweet, getting to swap. I'm betting Alaric would be all, 'Try and be nice, Caroline, you hardly know him!' Ugh."

"Who's Alaric?" Bobby asked curiously. "That's what Jack keeps saying about my roommate now. He says if I just act less dorky, things would be fine."

"Oh, he's this teacher from my town who came here. I guess he's like my friend, just all old and kind of dry," she explained, always willing to overshare. "Sounds like Jack's got the parental act down. I'll have to remember that."
