Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

In order to give people a place to get away from the traffic jam of the buffet and information tables, most of the chairs and tables had been set up further out on the lawn, away from the school building. The bonfires were going strong, and there was plenty of room for everyone to sit down and enjoy themselves. Assuming they weren't too busy still trying to figure this place out.

"I've heard a lot of things before," Caroline shared, wondering a little about this guy. "But direct statements of truth...well that's just damn near rare, isn't it?"

"In my experience, yes," Bruce said. "But cutting to the chase is just a better use of time for everyone involved."

"So what's your chase, Bruce?" Caroline asked bluntly. "How long do you give people before you decide it's time to cut ties and walk away from the warm welcome?"

"It varies from person to person, of course. Do I have anything in common with them? Is the conversation interesting? Do they strike me as a person I just don't want to have anything to do with?" Bruce asked. "But someone like you who keeps challenging what I say? That's intriguing, I'll give you that."

"There's my goal of the day met," Caroline said wryly. "I'll check intrigue attractive strangers off of my list."

"Well now I also know that you're organized and you have good taste in men," Bruce joked. "See how quickly you can learn things about people?"

"Hmm, let's recap what I've learned," Caroline offered with a smug little smile. "You like to think you're observant, you have good taste in women, and I can't decide if the creepy 'I meet people for a hobby' thing works for you or not. Should I be patient enough to find out?"

"Well if you want a serious answer, I'd have to take into consideration the fact that you were probably popular at your last school since, let's face it, you're pretty and you think you can get away with being as blunt as you are. I was this year's Homecoming Prince, so I think that might get a little bit of attention from you," Bruce said. "You're also decent at adjusting to strangeness since you don't seem at all thrown off your game by the kind of Fandom things I can only assume you've heard about by now, so I don't think you're going to be put off for too long by a genuine curiosity about people that you think might be creepy. And you're still talking to me instead of telling me to go away when I clearly didn't start off well, which I think means you're curious about me."

Bruce gave his chin a thoughtful scratch. "So I'm not going to tell you that you should be patient, but I think you will be."

[Sorry for the wall of text. Geez, that got longer than I thought it would.]

"What can I say, I believe in second chances," Caroline smirked. "And I'll have you know, Mr Homecoming Prince, I am the reigning Miss Mystic Falls so your title is not as impressive as you think." Which totally deserved a shake of her pretty hair.

"You're right. I haven't earned a city title yet. But I promise I'm working on it," Bruce said. "So, Miss Mystic Falls, what made you leave your city and come to Fandom? Just trying to spread your influence?"

No, he wasn't going to devalue her title by mentioning that he had never heard of Mystic Falls before. But he came from Gotham, a city that never seemed to be in the same place in any world, if it even existed, so he couldn't talk smack anyway.

"Probably what brings everyone here, Bruce. School," Caroline teased. "Plus the fun of my mother sending me away for my own good. It's all very dramatic, I promise."

"Of course it's dramatic. Probably less than half of the students are here for entirely mundane reasons," Bruce said. "It's just that kind of place."

"So no drama will shock you, huh?" Caroline didn't know why she wanted to get a rise out of this guy. He was like an emotionless Matt saying hey twice in one day. "Let's turn it around then. Why are you in Fandom, Bruce?"

"I'm not going to lay down any absolutes, but I don't shock easily," Bruce admitted. "Anyway, the short version is that I was going through tutors a little too quickly. I figured I would be better off going to a real school for a while. A year later, it's still holding my attention."

"Ah, so I've met my first true Fandom veteran," she said. "Do I get old war stories?"

"How much have your heard about Fandom's weirdness so far?" Bruce asked. "I just want to gauge what you're ready to hear at this point."

No way in hell was he mentioning the gremlin bite that made him think he was a mime. Or the pollen.

"Oh tons," she said. "My big brother was very thorough." Or something. "I'm not freaked out by lions and tigers or werewolves."

"Well in that case, you won't be surprised to know that we had to deal with some kind of fog that clouded minds and lizard monsters created by a mad scientist who kidnapped our principal last spring," Bruce said. "I helped rescue her while a lot more people fought a giant lizard monster."

And then he waited to see Caroline's reaction.

Caroline raised an eyebrow. The fog she got - Damon could make fog and she was totally trying to get him to show her how. But a lizard? "Seriously, do they have no security guards here?"

"We have a Canadian Mountie and a town police force," Bruce said with a shrug. "But sometimes special things happen here that need some helping hands."

"Oh, a Canadian. Sounds really scary," Caroline said with a grin. "But I get the special things. Especially when you start talking giant lizards, what the fuck?"

"Sometimes it's a goblin city springing up in town and we have to fight a giant robot," Bruce said. "Or sometimes people turn into animals randomly. My roommate has been an owl for weeks."

"An owl? Now you're just trying to make me look confused." It was a good thing Caroline looked cute when she was confused or she might have gotten pissy.

"I wish I was," Bruce said, appreciating the cute look. He also noted that it was the owl and not the monsters or goblin city that threw her. "I don't know how he changed, but one of his friends has been watching him since."

Yes, but monsters and goblins were possible. People transforming into animals? Totally messed up. "Just don't tell me you guys had a fight and now he's an owl. You don't come back from that, Bruce."
