Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

In order to give people a place to get away from the traffic jam of the buffet and information tables, most of the chairs and tables had been set up further out on the lawn, away from the school building. The bonfires were going strong, and there was plenty of room for everyone to sit down and enjoy themselves. Assuming they weren't too busy still trying to figure this place out.

[OCD is up! This is the FIRST post for general mingling. Please use this post first, if your browser can handle the comment load. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here and there's more room for mingling here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Things going weird on the island, huh? Sounded new and exciting. Wait, no, it just sounded like Fandom. Which, for the record, he had missed terribly. Los Angeles wasn't really prone to bursts of weirdness caused simply by physical location.

"I've been well enough," he said vaguely. "I was off in Los Angeles, getting some field experience. Vampires, demons, that sort of thing." Okay, now he was just bragging, making his tone sound casual and dismissive. "It was... uneventful."

L.A. was only prone to bursts of weirdness caused by geographical location if the geographical location happened to be within several yards of certain vampire detectives, anyhow.

Quinn's eyebrows crept up at the report. "So, totally uneventful. Except for the scary beasts from Hell part of it."

Ah, but Wes had yet to meet said vampire detectives. Unfortunately, as that's the kind of thing that would've shaken up his little vacation.

He gave Quinn a dismissive little wave of the hand, as if to say "all in a day's work." Yes, he was cocky. "It was nothing I haven't dealt with before," he said easily, trying to be smooth. But that never worked, Wes being a not-so-smooth kind of guy, so he decided to veer away from that topic. "What's been going on here in Fandom?"

"Some asshole tried to take the island over and kidnap a bunch of people," Quinn answered. "There were goblins. We had to go into this labyrinth and get everybody out. It was almost as much fun as that thing with the other dimensions last summer."

A pause. "No vampires, though."

Huh. That sounded interesting. And, not that he would admit it, but a little alarming. Hunting demons in LA was nothing compared to goblins and labyrinths and stuff. They probably didn't even have books on that sort of thing.

He nodded, doing his best to look unfazed by that piece of news. "Somehow I always seem to miss the island's strangest occurences," he remarked idly. "Pure luck, I imagine."

"Or you're island weirdness repellent," Quinn said hopefully. "In which case, you should not take any more vacations until we graduate."

Wesley laughed. "I'd been considering that route anyway," he said with a grin. "Los Angeles was lovely and all, but I find Fandom a much more welcoming atmosphere."

Well, probably not. He still had vampire detectives to meet, after all. But delusional planning was fun!

"Even if we don't have quite as many vampires?" Quinn smiled back at him. "Seriously. It's good that you're back."

"Thank you," Wesley said, flattered. "It's, er, it's good that you're... still here."

Never let it be said that Wes had a way with words. That would be a bald-faced lie.

"Well, obviously," Quinn said. "Have you signed up for classes yet, or do you still need to take care of that? I got ethics, acting, and sex ed."

She figured she'd use the last one to advocate for celibacy.

Ha. Sounded like her.

"Oh, I took ethics last semester," he said, interested. "It was nice. Professor Skywalker is, er, a bit intense. But the topics we discussed were very interesting." Interesting and intimidating, sure, but he wasn't going to mention that part.

"This semester I'm taking Teamwork 101, What Not To Do In A Fight, and Dealing With Idiots." He couldn't help a little grin at that last one. It was, actually, a skill he needed to brush up on.

"Yeah, I heard that about him," Quinn said wryly. "It just seems to be one of those classes you have to take while you're here, right? Didn't want to miss out on the fun."

She added, "You have to let me know about the idiots one. I was trying to take things that sounded normal-ish."

"Right," he agreed. If nothing else, it was that. It wouldn't be a Fandom education without a little intimidation and mild trauma.

"Yes, I'll be sure to keep you informed. It seems like an important skill, at any rate."
