Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

In order to give people a place to get away from the traffic jam of the buffet and information tables, most of the chairs and tables had been set up further out on the lawn, away from the school building. The bonfires were going strong, and there was plenty of room for everyone to sit down and enjoy themselves. Assuming they weren't too busy still trying to figure this place out.

"Everything happens for a reason, right?" Dolf said, a little desperately. That's what the children had believed, and he was starting to see the upsides of that attitude.

Triela opened her mouth to tell him that most of those reasons were bad, and stemmed from human greed and stupidity, but she paused. Oddly enough, she found herself wanting to assure him instead.

"Most things, at least," she offered. "Even if we don't know what they are yet."

"Right," Dolf said, rubbing at the side of his pants. "And it wasn't all bad here. More food at the cafetaria for me."

"You should have said something," Triela began. "You could have visited me."

Actually, he couldn't have, but now that the opportunity was past, it couldn't hurt to make the offer. And maybe it would make him smile a bit.

Predictably, it did make him smile, just a little. "I've been near Rome before," he said, "Maybe next time. I could practice my modern Italian."

Triela laughed. "Speaking of practice, we should figure out when we're meeting this semester."

"Well, you know my schedule for the most part!" he said. He was relieved for the different subject. "Wednesday afternoons are my only big thing."

"Still?" she asked with a grin. "You didn't take the opportunity to change things up this semester?"

"I have classes," he said, "But you know they don't take very long, and nobody's running football practice."

Which might have made him a little pouty.

Triela had to laugh. Back at the Agency Amadeo had a running joke about forming an all-girl's football team using the cyborgs. He'd even bought them all balls one year.

"Well, you could do something about that, you know." She grinned. "No one's stopping you."

"Maybe, but I haven't met anyone who plays!" Dolf argued. "They're all American."

As if that were the reason.

"It wouldn't be fair," she temporized. "I mean, I'm way faster and stronger than you."

"Then slow down a little," Dolf said, with a sigh. "You might be the only person who knows how, you know."

"To play football?" Triela asked, looking doubtful. It wasn't like she knew all the rules, but... she was from Rome. Besides, it was an easy game!

"Yes. Or you could help me find more people," he wheedled. "It's the greatest game, you know."

"You don't need me to find you more players," Triela said hesitantly. Because the truth was, she'd never actually played before. She might embarrass herself or something.

Triela sighed. "Fine. I'll play football with you."

Dolf grinned, though it was still a little dimmed due to the left-overs of the past conversation. "So we do football on Tuesday," he decided, "And languages on Thursday?"
