Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

In order to give people a place to get away from the traffic jam of the buffet and information tables, most of the chairs and tables had been set up further out on the lawn, away from the school building. The bonfires were going strong, and there was plenty of room for everyone to sit down and enjoy themselves. Assuming they weren't too busy still trying to figure this place out.

Nico snorted at the Thalia comment, because she was a hunter of Artemis after all. "Dude, it so sucks. But you'll get used to it. Especially if you run across Percy or Luke here on the island."

And now Leo looked confused again. "More...future stuff? Or past stuff? Time stuff?"

He hoped it was because if Percy was just chilling in some boarding school in Maryland then they totally wouldn't get to try out their sweet rescue attempt.

"Duh, they're from your past, so it's their future I'm worried about you spilling here, given your mouth is somehow bigger than mine." And really, how did that happen?

"Hey, I can totally keep a secret. I'm excellent at it." No, he really was not. "If I see them I totally won't say that Percy's lost and memory-less and Luke's a dead hero. I got it."

He did not.

"Seems like a rude thing to bring up anyway."

"No, listen to me," Nico said, stepping closer and working to try and surround Leo in a cool cloud of fear as his voice went all serious. His manic eyes tried to lock on Leo's as he spoke.

"Luke's smart. By Hades, even Percy will figure out you're a demigod eventually, Leo. And if they ask, you won't say anything or three feet of Stygian iron will draw the life out of you so fast you won't have time to light me on fire, son of Hephaestus."

Oh Leo felt what Nico was doing, and it did work to an extent, but some of it was getting blotted out by anger and jealousy. Leo took in a deep breath, trying to ignore the fear creeping up and tamping down his own temper. He knew getting mad was just going to end with something on fire.

"Dude, chill out, I got it!" Leo said, taking a step away from Nico. "And could you not bring up the fire thing? I'm trying to keep a low profile here."

Right, like Nico would ever chill out when it came to the cousin who was almost as close as his sister had ever been. "I'm already as chilled as I get," he sighed. "And you're new, so I mean this in the nicest way possible, okay? But if you feel that urge to open your trap, remember I can find you even when you're dead."

Leo just stared for a moment. "Has anyone ever told you that you're extremely creepy?"

"Dude, I'm the son of Hades. I'm doing something wrong if you don't find me creepy," Nico replied. And really, the fact that his friends didn't freak out and call him creepy all the time was just another reason to do what he could to protect them.

"Right, sorry," Leo said, rubbing at the back of his neck. "I'm new to this whole demigod thing. I've only been at it a few months and I've been too busy to take the classes at camp."

Saving Hera and working on saving the world sort of exempted him from all that.

"No, I'm sorry," Nico insisted, realizing he was being a little too much himself with this kid. "I shouldn't jump all over you when you've only been on the island for like, five minutes. You'll like it here. It's different from camp, but some of the subjects are seriously useful if you can manage to pay attention."

"I'd rather be at camp working on the Argo than taking classes here," Leo admitted. "But I guess learning what not to do in a fight could be useful. I've mostly been relying on luck and my, uh, cursed you-know-what power so far."

He wasn't even gonna say it, no.

"The Argo will wait," Nico said, thinking how there was the chance time would work in Leo's favor. "And it can be good to practice working with different tools. I've learned a lot about sword fighting since coming here."

"Hey, I don't need practice with tools. Comes naturally," Leo said. "But I suppose learning how to fight with more than hammers couldn't hurt. Jason shouldn't be the only perfect swordsman, right?"

No, he wasn't bitter at all. Really.

"Exactly. And he won't even know you've been practicing if you guys ever spar," Nico suggested, the smallest evil glint in his eye.

Considering the last time he and Jason fought they were both trying to kill each other, Leo didn't really see that happening.

"It'd take more than practice to beat him if he got into his whole 'grr argh' Roman thing," Leo said. "I am just so, so excited to go to a camp full of those beasts."

Except not.

"With their hardcore tattoos and mother wolf, it'll be a picnic, right?" Imagining Percy there was quite honestly terrifying. Though, maybe someone would beat a little sense into him.

"Oh yeah. I'm sure they'll invite us in for tea and cake," Leo joked. He sighed. "Or they might kill us on sight because they're jealous of our sweet orange shirts."

"Oh, now I know you'll hate Fandom," Nico joked, "they don't hand out hot orange shirts to new kids."

Those stupid demigod shirts were Nico's least favorite part of camp. Just imagine him trying to shrink into shadows while wearing bright orange. So not a good thing.

"What? But they were so functional and stylish!" No, he hated them. "Nah, I'm glad to be rid of them. Wouldn't believe how hard it is to get grease stains out of those shirts."

"Oh, your poor roommate," Nico said, realizing what was likely to go on there. He was so lucky Luke was a son of Hermes. "I hope there's a workshop somewhere in the school for you tinkering types."

"I brought my tool belt with me; that means the world is my workshop." Grease. Grease everywhere. "I bet that castle could use some modernizing."

No, children of Hephaestus didn't have much appreciation for antiquity.

Nico eyed him carefully. "At least I don't have to worry you'll bring the dorms down around our heads." Though the years before Leo, Nico might have been concerned. Freaking curses. "How are you with armor?"

Leo might actually bring down the dorms if he had a nightmare or something and accidentally caught fire, but he wasn't about to mention that.

"I'm great with armor, man. We're encouraged to make our own in cabin nine," Leo said, much more comfortable with talking about the gifts he had that didn't involve fire. "I'm better with the metal stuff than the practice leather ones, but I can do both. Jason said I might be able to grab the imperial gold stuff the Romans use when we get there."

Jason...might have been a little optimistic of how things would go when they got there.

Leo was like a breath of fresh demigod air, good at faking the happy and not letting all the prophecies get him down. Nico liked it, not that he'd seek to emulate it.

"I was just thinking you might like helping me try to alter mine. It's black iron, only it's gotten a little beaten lately." Thanks to Luke being a total badass.
