Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

In order to give people a place to get away from the traffic jam of the buffet and information tables, most of the chairs and tables had been set up further out on the lawn, away from the school building. The bonfires were going strong, and there was plenty of room for everyone to sit down and enjoy themselves. Assuming they weren't too busy still trying to figure this place out.

"Hi Jake!" Bobby said, giving the much (much, much, much) taller kid a wave. "I haven't seen you for a while. How are you? Did you have a good Christmas?"

He paused. "I'm sorry, I don't mean to be insensitive. I don't know if you celebrate Christmas."

Oh look, a puppy.

Jake wave off the apology with a cookie. "I didn't celebrate anything, I kind of got stuck as a stuffed animal for the last few weeks."

His eyes widened incredulously. "...do you do that a lot? Is that part of the whole..." Bobby waved his hands around to try to indicate 'werewolf' "...thing?"

Jake blinked and burst out laughing. "No, it isn't. That's a whole other kind of fuzzy. It's just the island screwing with me. I don't mind missing exams, though."

"But what are you going to do with taking exams?" he asked, looking worried. "I mean, I bet the teachers would let you make them up. But you better talk to them soon. You don't want to fail your classes. That would look bad on your transcript."

That earned him an eyeroll. "Because werewolves need good transcripts. It's not like I'm ever going to go to college, kid. Don't sweat about it."

Maybe he should go poke at Reno and Angua.

"How do you know?" Bobby retorted. "I wouldn't think werewolves would go to high school either. And it'd suck if you wanted to go to college but couldn't cause your transcripts had a big hole from one semester."

"Because I know I don't want to go to college?" he suggested. "I want to fix cars. I can learn what I need without a degree."

Even if it wouldn't hurt, but he doubted his dad or Sam would be eager about it.

"Oh." Bobby considered that, not totally sure how to respond. "Do you already fix cars? That's kind of cool."

Jake nodded. "I fixed up my car. It's a Volkswagen Rabbit so not exactly fancy, but it's pretty smooth."

He squinted at Bobby. "Do you even know how to drive?"

"...I just turned fourteen," Bobby replied, giving him a weird look.

"So? I could drive before I got my license," Jake shrugged. "No one's shown you yet?"

He looked doubtful. "But isn't that illegal?"

"Do you always stick to all the rules?" Jake asked back, because really that was just boring.

"Well, I mean..." Bobby shrugged a little. "I try to follow the important ones, you know?"

They were all the important ones to Bobby.

Jake laughed. "This one isn't. You should learn early so you don't need to waste time learning to drive once you turn sixteen. Seriously, pretty much anyone on the rez can drive before then."

"I didn't realise you were Native American," he said, possibly now considering if the reason Jake didn't care about college was because he didn't think he could go. He probably didn't know there were tons of scholarships. Bobby would make sure he found some for him. "What's it like on a reservation?"

Jake snorted and shrugged a shoulder. "Boring most of the time. It's a bit less dull now that there's werewolves and bloodsuckers around. It means we get to hunt things." Show off.

"Hunt...like...rarr?" Bobby asked, wondering if being a werewolf meant you hunted as a wolf.

Jake snapped his teeth at Bobby and laughed. "I suppose so. If I'm translating that correctly."

The teeth snap made him jump, but his curiosity kept Bobby asking questions. "What are bloodsuckers?"

And that was just amusing. "Vampires," Jake said casually. "They're our mortal enemies. If they come into our territory, we kill them."

There was the slightest chance that Jake was enjoying this way too much.

"Really. They're evil and they stink," he wrinkled his nose. "There's a few of them on the island too."

If there was a possibility that Bobby's eyes could get wider, it happened. "Really?" he repeated, looking around like a bat would turn into a vampire if he just looked hard enough.

"Oh, but they're probably not out during the day, right?"
