"Some of you may have noticed that there was some... excitement last week. That disrupted my class schedule." Max smiled just a bit. "So as much as I'm sure it will pain each and every one of you, we're going to forgo a final exam in favor of covering the last category of weapons that I wanted to examine."

What a tragedy! This was the point where students were free to wail and tear their hair.

"That last category is important because it's the same as the last category of so many things: everything else. It's one of those categories we have to have because people don't do things in neat, well-ordered ways. That means there are quite a few weapons that just don't fit. And a lot of times, the fact that they don't fit makes them interesting."

"Actually, I sort of lied, this will serve as an exam of sorts. I'm not going to tell you anything about these weapons. Pick a couple to play around with and see if you can figure out how to use them best. Hopefully, if you've been paying attention this semester, you'll figure something out. Or at least come up with some creative new uses." Max wasn't picky on that one.

With that, Max dumped a box out on his desk, spilling an assortment of bolas, lassos, boomerangs, kubotans, and a couple of canes. "And as always: be careful."

"That would be even worse," came the puppy's even more mumbly reply. "She has some idea about what's... going to happen, back home. Some pretty bad stuff, if what other people from my world keep saying is true. She wants to stop the worst from happening. I do, too."

That made sense. "So... what can you do?"

It sounded like not much. Except live with the anxiety.

Which sucked.

"I don't know. Train more, I guess. It wouldn't be a whole army coming after her if something like that happened again, I don't think. Not off the Wutai's own turf. But even then... she's no pushover already."

And so, anxiety it was.

Max snorted. "No," he said fondly. "No she isn't."

"And neither are you." Max was good at noticing that sort of thing, after all. Especially in his students.

Well, it would have been a pretty sad nation indeed, to come after Zack for revenge if he was one.

"I try not to be, anyhow," he agreed. "I wouldn't last long, doing the job I have back home, if I was."

"No. You wouldn't. Same thing with her."

Max gave Zack a serious look. "And neither of you are alone if you need extra hands."

Zack's smile seemed to kind of seep back into his expression. It belonged there, no matter what he was really feeling, but at just that moment, it was... thankful, maybe. Especially since he was realizing that he'd just pretty much dumped his troubles on the teacher.

Sorry, Max.

"I'll remember that," he replied, nodding a little. "Thank you."

Max didn't mind. In fact, he'd offered.

"You do that," Max admonished. "There are some things you have to do on your own, but there are some things you don't."
