"Some of you may have noticed that there was some... excitement last week. That disrupted my class schedule." Max smiled just a bit. "So as much as I'm sure it will pain each and every one of you, we're going to forgo a final exam in favor of covering the last category of weapons that I wanted to examine."

What a tragedy! This was the point where students were free to wail and tear their hair.

"That last category is important because it's the same as the last category of so many things: everything else. It's one of those categories we have to have because people don't do things in neat, well-ordered ways. That means there are quite a few weapons that just don't fit. And a lot of times, the fact that they don't fit makes them interesting."

"Actually, I sort of lied, this will serve as an exam of sorts. I'm not going to tell you anything about these weapons. Pick a couple to play around with and see if you can figure out how to use them best. Hopefully, if you've been paying attention this semester, you'll figure something out. Or at least come up with some creative new uses." Max wasn't picky on that one.

With that, Max dumped a box out on his desk, spilling an assortment of bolas, lassos, boomerangs, kubotans, and a couple of canes. "And as always: be careful."

Which isn't really much of one, now is it?

Lots of fun stuff to play with this week. At least in Max's opinion.

He's rather enjoyed this class, too.

Alex picked up a lasso and gave it a few swings, wondering if he could actually catch a classmate or something. Probably best not to try so he didn't get into trouble but he thought about it.

Karla liked the kubotans. Mostly because she could think of all sorts of ways it could come in handy, whether she was hitting someone with it or holding it as she hit someone. After this week, the desire to hit someone was running pretty high.

Like anyone was making much of a lecture today. Alexander was just excited to try to think of some creative ways to approach his weapons. This was definitely one of the finals he'd been looking forward to, mostly because the most a book was involved would be if you were throwing it at someone's head.

Kurt tried throwing a boomerang, because it seemed like it would be the easiest to get the hang of. After several throws that completely failed to come back to him, he managed one that actually arced nicely.

He was so busy celebrating that he wasn't paying attention when it came back and hit him in the face.

Zack looked maybe a little sheepish, mostly a lot tired as he walked up to Max after the lecture.

"Hey. I, uh... Kind of want to apologize for missing class last week," he said, attempting a little smile. "I went home for a job over the weekend, and then the portals went down and I wound up stranded."

Perhaps surprisingly, Midgar's portal outage had nothing to do with Fandom's, which had happened the day after.

Max smiled and waved dismissively. "Don't worry about it. You weren't the only one." In fact, Max himself had missed class. So it wasn't like he'd noticed...

"Everything okay back home?"

Zack shrugged a little, inhaling deeply and letting it loose all at once in a heavy sigh.

"It was last Monday. Things kind of got messy later in the week, but... I handled that."

And if a kind of weird, eerily blank look crossed Zack's face at that statement, well... what of it?

Max nodded slowly. Thoughtfully.

"Sounds like you don't feel the need to talk about it too much." Which was fine with Max. He understood that.

There was Zack's slightly uneasy smile, coming back for revenge.

"Well, there's not really much left to talk about."

He'd left the bodies on the floor of that cave, and all.

"I should have known better, and somebody got... hurt. A lot."

So much for not feeling the need to talk about it, huh?

"Ah." Max was silent for a moment. "How much could you have done differently?" Because sometimes... there was nothing.

Zack chewed his lips for a moment, and then shrugged, looking down somewhere toward his toes.

"I don't know," he admitted. "I shouldn't have let her go out alone, though."

Max didn't know who Zack was talking about, but he knew that tone. "How?"

"I just..." He inhaled again, and his exhale this time was a lot more ragged than before. "There's this country, on a different continent from the one that my company's headquarters is in, and... It's... maybe the whole country who kind of..." He shifted his weight uneasily from one foot to the other. "... Holds a grudge? Against me?"

Zack Fair was something of a piece of work, apparently.
