Food Appreciation [Week 14, Period 4, Mon. 12/06]

John looked tired as he greeted the class this morning, but still he was there, despite plans to be gone shortly. "Yeah, weird shit happening on island means I didn't make it to the store this morning. So you guys get to suffer like I had to on the plane back from Colorado. Apparently there's a rash of people eating their way through things, writing books about how it goes, and then someone thinking it was a great idea to make a movie about it. This one is about a decent chick who eats her way around the world, breaking hearts as well as belt buckles." John picked up the remote, causing the lights to dim and the previews to begin. "Now, I won't blame anyone who'd rather leave and see what's going on outside, just remember to tell someone where you're going and avoid wearing meat and ranch dressing for clothes. It doesn't end as well as you might think. Those of you who stay, have some popcorn and enjoy the show!"

There's popcorn and John won't argue with anyone who would rather throw it than pay attention.

... Yeah, by now Kate wasn't so much paying attention as checking Portalocity schedules for several different destinations on her phone. So not staying.

Peter peered over at Kate's phone.

"You know, I think I'm kind of scared that I'm not doing the same thing," he said. But Radio last night had made him plan to stay and try to help things.

"I don't know, I might be overreacting," Kate muttered, not really looking away from her phone. New York was what she was currently looking at. "But I just... don't wanna deal with this shit."

"Smart move," Peter said. "I mean, it's one thing to deal with a mess of kidnappings on a normal day. During a week where something out of a Tolkein and Lewis Carroll joint bender is apparently sprouting up on the island, I think normal survival instincts say 'get the hell out of Dodge'."

"Mmhmm," Kate agreed, vaguely. Bristol? How about Bristol? "There are a lot of heroes on this island, though."

She said 'heroes' like it was an insult.

Peter chuckled. Possibly because he'd found himself in that category, at least this time. "Yeah. And they always manage to save the day, so it's almost like we could just let them deal with things while the rest of us... chill out and avoid the bad stuff."

This time, Kate did actually glance over at him. "Yeah, it... really doesn't work like that." She'd seen too many large-scale weirdnesses to think it was that simple.

"I said almost," Peter said, with a shrug. "But I guess it's really up to... whether or not you feel like you can ditch dealing with stuff when your friends are in trouble."

He, for one, couldn't. Not this time, at least.

Kate's jaw clenched at that particular phrasing, and her eyes narrowed. "Doesn't work like that, either," she told him in a clipped tone, then returned her attention to the phone.

Sorry, Peter.

Peter shrugged again, and let her be. He didn't think he was wrong, but then again... Peter Bishop rarely thought he was wrong.

Alex hadn't really noticed anything that weird going on (it was Fandom, weird shit always happened) but maybe he'd look a little closer when he got out of class today.

He had his phone out and was busy texting his way out of dodge. Can anyone blame him not wanting to become a zombie again?
