Library [Thursdsay 12/02]

William had not yet given in to the urge to try coffee in place of tea. He was, however, going to avoid hot chocolate for the next while after last night's severe case of the hiccups following drinking the thermos Kuukaku had sent out to him.

In retrospect, he really should have anticipated something like that.

In any case, the library was open if slightly sleepy.

"William?" Scully came in fairly early, and smiled when she saw him. "I and a couple friends need to go back into Special Collections today. Mr. DeTamble wrote me a note. Would you mind showing us back there?"

"Would I mind?" William repeated, a grin starting to form. "Of course not. I'd be glad to. It's an utterly fascinating experience."

Scully looked intrigued. "Oh, good. Spock and Claudia should be here fairly soon... what was it like when you went in there?"

"Well, to begin it was... deceptively tame," William admitted. "But then there was some pinging fail on my part there was this sound like rushing water, and the next thing you know, we're being pursued by a tidal wave. Which, although I ended up quite drenched myself, somehow miraculously managed to not touch the books at all."

Thursdays tended to be non-existent quiet for Claudia, so she was looking forward to having something to do, this time.

Plus, you know, Special Collections.

She had her handwavey permission slip, and did her best not to visibly vibrate with excitement. "Heya, William! I hear you might be joining us on an adventure, today."

"Well, it would be remiss of me to send you in to Special Collections without a guide," William said, lips twitching up in a bit of a smile. "Plus, I admit that it fascinates me and I'd very much enjoy a return trip."

"I'm totally looking forward to it." She had been looking for an opportunity to check it out forever, after all. "I've heard some weird stories, yo."

"I've heard that it's never really quite the same experience twice," William said with a nod. "I'm looking forward to putting that claim to the test," he added as he pulled several pairs of protective gloves from a desk drawer. "Try these on," he said, handing Claudia a pair.

"Oh good, you made it." Scully brightened when Claudia arrived, then gravely said, "Did you bring waders?"

Claudia blinked. "Uh. Was I supposed to?" She had her permission slip, and a few tools jammed into her pockets. Was she meant to bring a full regiment of wilderness gear?

"William said there was a flood in there, last time." Scully quirked a smile. "But I bet we'd just end up clomping around in huge boots with no water, if we had brought any."

"I didn't think it would have been doctored," William grumbled.

People didn't really give a crap about educating children about Stranger Danger where he was from, no. Especially if said children were already orphans.

Once the group had assembled, gloves had been donned, and warnings given out, William unlocked the door to Special Collections and ushered the others inside.

"Best not give anything a chance to get out into the island at large," he said, as he made sure the door was shut behind them, pocketing the key.

Scully was kind of wishing she'd brought her gun with that statement. She looked around at the towering shelves of books, and blew out a slow breath. "Right. So. Djinn first, please. If you have any idea where to start."

"This way," he said, leading them to the left. Part of him was practically itching to ask why that particular subject, but he managed to keep his manners in check. "Historical accounts of individual djinn are here," he indicated a shelf, "further down is some more general information about the creatures on the whole." How far he'd come in the past few months, that he could say that in all seriousness.

"Right." Some of the books were scrolls; some were huge tomes with brass clasps; a few appeared to be sheepskin or calfskin, etched with burnt and carved symbols. Gulp. "I'll start over in the individual section- although if any of you run across a djinnayah named Jeanne, French, 15th Century? Let me know."

Well, not last night.

Henry was pacing a bit, and eying Special Collections. He had no problem with Scully and her friends going back there, especially with William to show the way. But he was still going to go in after them if they weren't out in a few hours.
